i'm new here, most the time just read. has anyone used rawhide to cover glued heavy leather belting ? i normally use a thin soft leather to cover with , but picked up some rawhide and thought i'd try that. it's thin, would one see through it ? any help would be appreciated. paul

Hi Paul

Covering a sheath with rawhide is pretty simple but you have to wet the rawhide first. Otherwise it's going to be a wrestling match and the rawhide usually wins.
Look on page 54 of the Oct Knives Illustrated. This sheath was covered with deer rawhide with some hair left on.

Some times if the rawhide is thin I dye the inside leather first. Then dye the rawhide close to the same color.

micky, thanks for the dye idea. i knew to wet it, i've used it to back a long bow, but there i wasn't worried about seeing through it. thanks again. paul
