Just finished up a knife with an antler spacer. It wound up a little dirty looking from the guard and handle material getting into the pores. Any advice on how to keep it clean while shaping or clean up afterward?

Thanks

I buff the antler with a noncoloring rough like white dimond befor
buffing anything else, seems to seal it so it won't pick up dirt
from other meterial. Gib

I agree with Gib, I hand sand @ 600 grit then buff with white rouge, then spray it down with "fixit" this gives you a little more sheen when you buff, and seals the antler.

Good Luck

Most art supply shops carry "Workable fixative" which I use on all my graphite drawings and watercolor. If you spray your antler down with this it will feel greasy at first, just rub it in with a towl and let it sit for a bit and it seals it up quite nice (and costs almost nothing), it also provides a workable surface so if you do get anything on it you can wash it off for the most part without really touching the underlying antler.
