What would be a good size round stock to work with
in making friction folders or smaller knives..

Mongo, I'll give you this information and let you figure what size you want to go with. Lets say all these are forged to the edge. 3/8 = 1".. 1/2 = 1 1/4".. 5/8 = 1 1/2".. and 3/4 = 1 3/4". Your size may be somewhat different, but this is pretty close to what I've come up with. Most of what I forge is from round stock. Hope this helps. Ray

I work with 3/8" up to 1/2". Over 1/2" it becomes a real job flattening, and that's what you spend your fuel and your energy doing instead of blade shaping and bevelling--best to switch to flat stock at that point.
