I got tired of my old cheap digital camera and finally bought a new one. I ended up getting the Sony Mavica MVC-FD92.
I'd had my eye on the Sony Mavica's since the old FD73. I liked the 2.5 inch LCD viewer a lot because I have trouble seeing anything on the smaller ones. There were a few things I didn't like about the older models though. The max res on those was 640x480, and shots were stored on standard 3-1/2" floppies, in JPEG format only. The idea of the floppy was cool, but with today's higher resolutions, it's not of much use.
The MVC-FD92 can also use 3-1/2" floppies which is okay with JPEGs, but it also can use memory sticks. I got a 32MB stick, and may go up to 128MB later. This one has many resolutions to choose from. For stills it has:
- 1472x1104
- 1280x960
- 1280x848
- 1024x768
- 640x480
Stills can be saved in JPG, GIF, or uncompressed TIFF. That was a big plus. It also can do 10 shot animated GIFs, which I thought was pretty cool. And as if that weren't enough, it has a built-in mike and speaker, and can shoot 60 second MPEG mini-movies with sound. You can play them back on the camera complete with sound before saving it to the PC.
It has an 8x true zoom, with 16x zoom using software assist. Another thing that I absolutely love is the autofocus. With my tired old eyes, it's hard to tell when something is in focus.
Standard autofocus works from 9.8" to infinity. The macro autofocus lets you get to within 1.2" from the subject. That's pretty dang close. I tried it by holding the camera about 2" from my watch. I took a shot, loaded it on the PC, then looked at the results. I could clearly read all the stuff on the dial including the super small print that I now know says "Swiss Quartz". I couldn't read it before. :)
It also has several built-in effects and filters like solarize, sepia, etc. I probably won't ever use that stuff. I'll do any effects I want in PhotoShop and/or Paintshop Pro.
Sorry for rambling. I'm just excited about my new toy. My wife made me get it. She said that for years all I've done is buy stuff for her and the girls, and it was time for me to do something for myself. This by the way, is the same wife :) that bought me a milling machine for Christmas. I think I'll keep her.
