Hey everyone, was wondering if there was going to be a new KITH for spring or anytime soon.

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

I was just thinking about that the other day. This is about the time of year we've done a Newbie KITH in the past.

Do you have anything particular in mind?

Well since I haven't been in the shop in over a year, yes newbie sounds good and keeping it simple would work. Basic knife with shealth? The first KITH I did was here and just as basic as it could be.

Basic knife works. Sometimes it's better to keep things simple. BTW, Andy Colglazier put up a poll over at Rammy, it looks like they're leaning towards a kitchen knife competition.

Saw that, should we tell them about the blanks Tracy is carrying now. It would make it easier on everyone.

Good idea. I wonder if Tracy would cut us a deal, and we could do a build off?

May be like David did at Greatlake waterjet? Possible maybe.

GLWJ cuts the blanks for Tracy. . .

Tracy also has some pretty cool folder kit blanks that I think are cut by GLWJ too - that might be fun. You would still have to do all of the grinding & fitting but you wouldn't have to worry about cutting out all of those little parts. It might be a good intro into folders for newbs like me.

That is an idea.

How many of you guys forge? I do primarily stock removal, and tried my hand at a hammer and hot steel last summer for the first time.

Any interest in a forged-only KITH?

This is sounding good. I haven't done a KITH in a while. I will do a forged blade, but I think that limits participation.

I don't necessarily want to limit participation. But on the other hand, we had what--around 30 signed up in the last newbie KITH?

I've attempted forging a couple of times, but I haven't been too successful at getting the blade very close to final shape. To be honest, it just ends up be just another stock removal that's a much bigger PITA. I'm really not even sure how "forged" it needs to be to be considered a "forged" blade. I am going to a hammer-in next week so maybe I'll pick up so tips. Basically what I'm saying is I'm open for a forged only KITH, probably wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd definately give it a go. It's all about having fun and learning anyway right?

Some other theme ideas to throw out there:
Neck Knife
Friction Folder
Horizontal carry - this of course would require a sheath
Historical - anything from Vietnam era to Caveman
What my grandpa would have carried
Something for the Wife/Mom/Girlfriend, etc. (I'm assuming this will most likely be another all male event)

Personally I could do forge. But some people would be turned off by this and we want everyone to feel welcome.

You could always do:
Hunters
EDC
Gentlemans's Knife
Grilling
There are just so many options. You might want to just pick about 4 of them and do a poll and go from there. That might atleast tell you if there is enough interest.

I'm interested.

I'd be REALLY interested in a folding KITH too. If I can make a slipjoint, I'm pretty sure anyone can.

A couple of others to throw in the hat

Kitchen Kinfe
Hunting knife

Keep the ideas coming. I'm buried right now and for the foreseeable future, so I won't be playing, but I do love to follow these events!

I'm out as well. Last summer I got the plans for Tracy's No Weld Grinder, and got a hold of the steel tubing for the frame. I finally have time to work on some knives, so I'm hoping to make and sell enough to order the wheels from Rob Frink and pick up a motor somewhere.

Come on I still have to build mine and make some knives too. But I know we can find time for a little fun and Andy that goes for you too.

I built a total of 2 knives last year! :banghead

This year is off to a better start. I have profiled 5 blades in the last couple of weeks, so we'll see.

As long as the KITH deadline is sometime like late spring or summer, then I might be able to join in.

How about have them finished by July 24th? That gives everyone plenty of time and it is after the 4th of July. And maybe everyone could join in and make this a great KITH.

Dang it--you talked me into it.

I'll try and start one of them poll thingies to see what people want to make. . .
