View Full Version : Removing block annodized color from blade

I have an old knife that I am trying to restore. Technically, I suppose that I'm trying to remake it. The blade, itself, is in fine shape, but the handle and guard are ruined.

The blade has been colored black. I suppose it was annodized. I am trying to find a way to remove that color and get a nice, pretty, shiny metal finish. Any ideas?

The blade has sentimental value, so I don't want to start over with a new blade.

Thanks for your help.

If the blade is steel, it is unlikely that it is anodized. It could be blued, parkerized, powder-coated, nitrided, or any number of other processes, each of which would have had its own method of application (and, of course, removal).

Without knowing what the finish is, I would consider using a fine abrasive to remove it. Start with 400 grit wet-or-dry paper, and a sanding block that conforms to the shape of the blade. When all the finish is off, you can either leave it at that level, or continue rubbing it out through finer grits (600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, etc.), and quit when you are pleased with the appearance.

If the knife is truly old, chances are good that it is carbon steel, and will need to be oiled or otherwise protected against rust. Hope this helps.
