Im thinking on a San Mai chefs blade. Was going to try a 52100 core with a mild steel exterior.

I have never made a "mild steel" damascus, only 10 series steels with 15N20, and 5160.

My question is, would plain old 12-14 guage sheet steel work for a mild steel? Or would I be better off using cold rolled barstock? I plan on mixing this with nickle sheet.

Is there a concern with delamination with a mild and a high carbon due to their reacting diffrently to the quench?

Thanks in advance

God Bless

Mike

Plain old sheet would work, i.e. weld up alright - but since it's usually A36 you don't know what you're getting. I stopped using it 'cause it often looks crappy after the etch - blotchy, or grainy, inconsistant - CR looks better and is made from better steel.
I don't think you'll run into delamination problems in the quench.
