Hi Steve,

Do you normally use a narrower material for the sub hilt than you use for the guard? Some appear the same thickness, some don't.

Thanks,

Zane

I recently got steves sub hilt video, and he used the same stock for both, (5/16"x3/4" I think it was) but I'm guessing itll work just fine if one was wider than the other.

Thanks Damon, I have been studying the video also. In some of the professional pictures over the years the sub hilt appears smaller than the guard, of course it could be camera angle etc...

yup.... the angled perspective of those nice photos (when I traced the outlines) gave wonky proportions, but now ive managed a template which looks right, and fits both the eye, and hand right.

just got some $$ in so now I'm off to order my guard stock. :D

You sound like you're hooked:). I'm watching Steve's video again as I type this. I should have done so before starting this thread!

Yes and yes. On a big fighter I typically use 3/8" for the guard and either 3/8", or 5/16" for the sub-hilt, whatever you like.
Just ask and I'll send you a tracing of my pattern, if you like.

Thanks Steve,

I would appreciate that, could I talk you out of a tracing of the Big Bear and one of the Baby Bear?

Sure, but I don't have a Baby Bear pattern and am not aware of an "official" one. I have a tracing of the knife on the cover of Bob's book, but it's basically a Boot Knife with sub-hilt.

That's perfect! You're sub hilt patterns for the most part are somewhat different from Bob's aren't they. I like the blade to handle ratios in your pictures.

Thank you

Some of them are from Bobs hands to mine, others are just modifications, with longer blade, etc.

I have that book, I really like that knife on the cover. Stag is probably my favorite handle material.

Stag is a long-time favorite, it seems. Mine, too!
