Hi guys.
I have been making knives for a some years now. And have recently really wanted to try my hand at making the Loveless patterns. I was so lucky that a knifemaker friend of mine had a copy of some of the original patterns lying in his shop. So i am currently making a small batch of a dixon fighter, hideout, dropped hunter and a stiffhorn. So far the finishgrinding of the hideout and the dixon is kicking my ass. :D
But i will get a hang of it i hope.

I know that some of you guys have actually been working with Bob and Jim. My question is, is it ok to try and make their designs? My idea is that i will try my best to get as close to the originals. ( although i know that is not gonna happen). But it gives me a goal in my knifemaking. And i find myself not trying to take shortcuts, like maybe leave a scratch, which could happen on my own designs.

I hope it is ok to post here. I?ll probably be back with more knife related questions in the future. :D

By the way. I dont know if there is some of you that live in europe. But i seem to have a really hard time finding 416 ss here. I am currently making brass guards. but i would rather make them out of 416. and the ss i can find here is gumming up my files. and are impossible for me to work with.

Cheers
Michael Stein

Here is a picture of the stiffhorn i just finished. blade is ats-34 and the handle is walnut burl.

Welcome, Michael and best wishes for your knifemaking endeavors.
I don't think making Loveless designs will be a problem since probably 80% of the knifemakers out there either are currently, or have made, Loveless inspired knives.

I would go to a show, or two in Europe and see what the makers there say about 416SS. I'm sure that someone can help you. Of course, there are knife forums there, also, where you can get some help.

Again, welcome and best of luck. We'll look fwd. to seeing more of your knives. The photo you posted looks great!

Hi Steve
Thank you for the welcome. I have tried just about anything to get the 416. It seems im the only danish knifemaker, who's looking for it at this time.
I have decided, that if i sell the next knife i finish, im gonna order some from the states.
Im just gonna order enough for the next 20-30 knives, close my eyes and try to forget about the shipping costs. :-)
Thanks again and have a nice weekend.
Michael

Hi Steve.

Michael, I buy my AISI 416 in Italy from Ksteel (http://www.ksteelitalia.com/newsite/). For the moment I have no trouble to find it. I think they can be shipped steel without any problems, if you need a reference send me an email and I'll help you.

Thanks Riccardo.
I will send them an email tommorow.
It will be a lot cheaper for me to find it in a eu country.
Because it wont add customs fee and taxes. :-)
Cheers Mike
