I'd love to build something similar to a harry archer chute knife. I was just wondering how the guard I'd fitted on one. Is the
Handle smaller in relation to the blade to facilitate it sliding on or is it fitted from the blade side with the handle being a bit
Wider than the blade?

Which Archer 'Chute. The Loveless version, or the Johnson one?
The Loveless goes on from the front. The Johnson goes on from the back.
The Johnson is a bear to get right!

I'm thinking of a Johnson style definitely..I saw pictures of one that looks like a slightly recurved blade.

That's it. It's the top one in this photo:

Yes. Does the guard slide over the handle like many full tang Bowies? I think I will make my blade like the bottom knife and do a swedge instead
Of a full double grind.

Yes, the handle is narrower than the blade, but make the slide-over fit as tight as possible. The handle at the front has to a bit wider than the handle from there back. That blade is a bit difficult to grind, though that goes for all of them, so a certain extent, if you want them done well.

Steve, how do you finish the joint between the bottom of the guard and the tang so you don't have a small gap? Seems like that would be a challenge on the Johnson version.

It is difficult. You need to file a little eliot, exactly in line with the rear of the guard and punch/peen the bottom of the inside of the guard into that little slot. Not easy.
