View Full Version : Comments Week 19
stevekorn 08-21-2001, 04:23 AM With only a field of four entries we had an interesting contest. Some of the top guns were absent and they were missed.
Neil Charity: Your knife was a beauty, but your photo wasn't your best as your background was stained and not the best color for your subject. You need some contrast to make the knife pop.
Fred Carter: Another spectacular knife!!! I thought your props were a little overwhelming and I'm curious as to the handle inlay material. The color under the gold looked a bit unusual.
Rade Hawkins: In this photo the blade lacked the sharpness of your other pictures. You might have put the knife handle in the crook of the horns and the tip where the knife handle was. This might have made for a more interesting composition.:)
My entry should be judged by someone else.
PhilL0496 08-21-2001, 09:45 AM This was a pretty easy week for me to pick a pic.
Fred's was far and away the best.
Steve and Rade, both suffered the same fault, poor composition and gimmicky use of a prop.
Neil, your pic was just too mushy, the knife just blended into the background.
Rade L Hawkins 08-21-2001, 11:03 AM I was afraid of this my photo didn't get any votes at all---and it shouldn't have it was the worst of the bunch. It was the only one I had and time was running out to post a photo.
Steve's photo was unique, however it did not show the knife to it best advantage. Side views are the best
Fred's was outstanding as usual but to busy for my taste
neil's got my vote, the knife was excellent but the backgroundd sucks neil, change it you will win
Rade's-------see above
this is just my opinion, it could be wrong
CKDadmin 08-21-2001, 03:07 PM Well done all!
Steve, second win! That means we'll be expecting a lot from you from here on in ... Being a multi-winner brings a lot of new responsibility with it. :)
If the rest of you guys who aren't posting to the contest would like for us to create a "powder puff" league for you to compete in, let me know ... whaaa hah ha haha
Alex
stevekorn 08-21-2001, 04:05 PM Phil I invited you to critique my pic and I'm glad you did. Now I invite you to dust off your camera and put into practice all that you preach.
PhilL0496 08-21-2001, 06:32 PM Steve, Been There, Done That, Got the T-shirt.
I've told you at our lunch why I have no interest in taking pictures right now. Since I also told you everything I know about photography that day maybe my comments here aren't needed?
I'll certainly stop my preaching.
stevekorn 08-21-2001, 06:49 PM Phil,
You have helped a lot of us, so I wouldn't want you to stop giving advice. I thought that you might shoot a few rolls to show us how your techniques work. I will respect your reason for not doing it.
After saying that I know you like to teach and you are good at
it.
CKDadmin 08-21-2001, 07:34 PM Relax men ...
We'll take "Bozo the Clown", if he has some custom knives and wants to get in. I was only kidding about the "powder puff" league comment. I keep forgetting that I'm dealing with Artists and that I have to be careful with what I say ... LMAO
I know boys ... It's hard to get that butt waxed week-in and week-out ... but, you've got to get in to win!
I recommend that we institute a new clause ... we need a yearly "Champions Dinner" like "the Masters" has ...

PhilL0496 08-21-2001, 07:36 PM Ahhhhhhh Steve, I knew I could hook ya if I didn't add a Smiley. :)
I'm not going anywhere. The fact is I don't have to be taking pics to make comments or add something to the discussion. I much prefer working on pics and doing graphics then snapping the shutter. I'd much rather try to help folks here improve their photo skills, than say, "Oh, look what I did." I've said it before and I'll say it again, I was never a great photographer. I was a well paid professional photographer for 15 years. I do see guys here with desire and the eye to be very good. If I can add anything to help make them great, or encourage them to do better I'll comment.
My review may have been too abrupt , and I can see where you may have taken it wrong.
Steve, I see you becoming more and more comfortable with your lighting settup and it shows in your work. Where I think you need improvement is in your composition. You thought Fred's pic was too busy and I think you could learn a lot by studying his composition. It's just an opinion.
ghostdog 08-22-2001, 04:49 PM Steve, you won and I think you deserved to win....that is why I voted for you. The only improvement on the shot from my perspective would have been to be a bit closer. What the heck was that statue anyway? Chinese dog? He was cute and weird and sure made me take a second look which I think is what sells knives.

Rade L Hawkins 08-23-2001, 09:31 AM Steve the more I look at that knife eating dog the more I like it. This photo has started to grow on me. How about a photo of the critter holding the knife. I don't think any one would mind if you did one here---Rade
