In the tutorial it shows the basic construction of the light box, easy enough. Then the strobe light is described. Would the outcome be different with a camera mounted flash (not built in)? Will it be different enough to require buying a strobe? If the flash works, should I put the lens on the flash to soften the light (diffuser)?

Bob, I'm not sure if Steve is even using that light box setup any more. I know he did try the setup I suggested to him for a while, but I have no idea what he's using now.

The thread showing the setup I suggested is here.

The strobe unit that Steve is using is very expensive, the advantage of that type of unit is that is has a built in modeling light that lets you see what the flash will look like. Your standard flashes won't let you see what you'll be getting. I've suggested to several people that they use Daylight Balanced Photofloods instead.

Bob,
I would have answered this sooner, but my computer crashed.
Have tried a number of boxes with varying degrees of success. My latest is three pieces of foam core attatched looking like a big "C"and they are used as is or lined with the shiny side of silver foil.
You can use any background material that you like and even use another piece of foam-core on the top.
The dimensions are 23" by 23" by 23" and that's the "C" shape no bottom and no top.
Lighting: I use a whitelightning ultra 600, but you can use anything you have.
Phil gave things that I didn't so if you have any more questions give a hollar!!! ;)

Hey Bob,
You don't need tin foil, it doesn't work that well. (after testing it again).Using your on camera flash would probably work with an off camera cord. Your camera should have a place for the synch cord if not you can mount an atatchment in the flash mount on top of your prism . That works for off camera !
An easier way to explain is: 201-224-2923

Steve,

My camera has a wireless flash and can work off camera. I just have to set it up correctly.

Are you planning to go to the Spirit of Steel Show? If so, I will bring you something, if not, I'll mail it.
