View Full Version : Winter meeting of the Georgia Guild
Harry Mathews 12-12-2008, 04:41 PM The winter meeting of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild will be held on Feb 7, 2009 at the Twin Blades shop in Statesboro, GA. We will have a social the night before for those that arrive early and if you want to get in some forging on Friday afternoon you are welcome to come early. There will likely be several forges hot Friday and Saturday. If you want to do a demonstration or have something you are having a problem with and would like a demonstration on how to do it, let us know and we will see if we can round up a pro. The price of gas is even lower than it was for the fall meeting and it is expected to go lower so plan on attending.
Save the date and check back for more information.
Color me there, Friday and Saturday. How about some discussion on "How to Make a profit and still keep the government happy"?
john costa 12-15-2008, 07:38 AM I'll be there. Carl, do like the army, no ask no tell. Can you say " Fair Tax " ??
Best I can tell the "Fair Tax" will make everyone happy except the givment.
Jamey Saunders 12-15-2008, 08:57 AM Best I can tell the "Fair Tax" will make everyone happy except the givment.
...which makes it my favorite tax reform plan...
I'll do my best to be there. It's hard to plan that far out with a new baby, though. I'll know more closer to the date.
george 12-15-2008, 10:31 AM I"ll be there,george
Harry Mathews 12-15-2008, 12:07 PM Jamie you have to get into the swing with this new baby thing. You plan on being here because it makes you feel good and gives you something to look forward to besides paying bills and changing diapers. When you realize it isn't going to work out, you just don't go and you feel good about doing what a good Dad should do. You win both ways.
Hope you can make it though.
There have been several questions about posting pictures on the various forums and I thought we might do a demo on that. This making a profit thing would be a good one if I knew someone that was doing it. Several years ago I started to do a time and motion study on knife making and about half way into it I realized I didn't want to finish.
Still open for Demo suggestions.
stephanfowler 12-15-2008, 01:20 PM I'll be there looking forward to it.
Stephan
(would like to see a good demo on guard fitment and soldering)
DLRoberts 12-15-2008, 07:04 PM I'm not sure how many of the "Valley Cutthroats" are going to make the trek from Columbus, but I know it will be more than just me. I'll give you a head count later.
The demo on posting images is a good #1 demo.
Carl and other hot steel folks: I may even try to come on Friday and bring my spanking new hammers to hit hot steel. I'm not sure I can be converted, but I would like to take a whack at it.
Dave Roberts
Hey Dave, a start is usually all I need. I use circle hooks so there's no need for a hard hook-set just a strong knot (you'll do the rest all by yourself).
I understand what you're saying Harry, I tired the hours/knife thing early on - it was either quit "figuring" or quit "doing". Just trying to figure out how to keep the wolves at bay and maintain my supplies for the hard winter coming. Seems the Givment wants permits for everything and then wants to tax the permits. Very discouraging trying to do things right and "give unto Ceasar".
Stephan - think you'll have your knives back by then? Lot of the guys want to see them.
James Mitchell 12-16-2008, 09:05 AM I'd sure be in favor of a demo on posting photos...I have been able to post on the forum, but I'm lost trying to get a photo in the gallery....Hope to see you all in Feb...james
Sandy Morrissey 12-16-2008, 09:23 AM Crex---SIR!--------------By chance if you are referring to those (WOW WOW WOW!!!) knives made by Stephan----------?
They and their new dresses were mailed to Stephan yesterday and he should have them by tomorrow------------Dad
Hey Dad, I'll be sure to listen for the "Happy Dance" from across the interstate. I know he'll be a jumpin'! Maybe he'll post a pic or two of them for us.
Doug Adams 01-13-2009, 05:57 PM Hi,
If possible I would like to see a blade grinding demo. I have been doing some hollow grinding, but would like to see someone with experience do it.
Thanks,
Doug Adams

Harry Mathews 01-14-2009, 10:15 AM Scott I hope that you have a successful and safe hunt. While you are gone, we will probably change the bylaws to extend the term of the president to four years and add an automatic second term.:p
george 01-14-2009, 04:13 PM I'll second the motion
Harry Mathews 01-14-2009, 09:21 PM Doug I am not sure what the third demonstration will be right now, but if it ends up being the guard fitting, we can give you a little time on the grinder after the meeting if you like. Watching someone do it doesn't work nearly as well as having someone watch you. A few pointers can get you headed in the right direction in no time, the rest is just practice.
Doug Adams 01-15-2009, 05:16 AM Thanks Harry that would be great if there is time.
