This is an old Kabar knife that I had when I was a kid. I took the stacked leather off the tang and took the guard, etc. off. The blade was teally rusted. Couldn't even read the Kabar logo. I used a file and belt sander to clean the rust off. I would hold it to the sander for a few seconds then put it in a pan of water for a few seconds. Kept doing that till it got the shape and cleaned up.
The wood is maple burl (unstabilized). I had it in the oven (gas) with just the heat from the pilot light to kinda dry it out. One day I came home from work and the house had this funky smell. She had cooked my wood :) Then I put 3 coats of Tru-Oil and finished with Paste Wax. The tang is secured with JB Weld. Honest comments please.
