Don,

Read your thread on wax/oil finish, but do you dye the sheath if you want another color before the wax/oil?

Do you have any recommendations on stain brands, etc?

Thanks,

Bob Sigmon

Bob, definitely dye before the hot dip. I use Fiebing's Professional Oil Dye, applied with a wool dauber.

Thanks for the info. Just don't want to do anything stupid when it is so easy to avoid problems by asking the pros.

Thanks again,

Bob Sigmon

I build large leather items (trunks & cases) and i found dyeing to be a job that is very unpredictable. So i changed to harness leather that i get in 3 or 4 colors & the color doesn't come off on your clothes.

cgilock is the harness leather o.k. for knife blades and what weights does it come in and where do you get it?

Thanks

Yes Ghostdog harness leather is excellent for sheaths. Harness leather is hot stuffed with tallow & fats during the tanning process. This makes it a great water resistant leather. However it does not tool well. Some embossing can be done but it is very shallow. As for weights i use 10 to 16 oz myself. But i believe it can be gotten thinner. Try this link these are good people to deal with.
