I really hate it when I buy a custom knife and find that it comes with a sheath that has a snap fitting right where it will rub on the handle or blade. Recently I bought a beautifule Damascus utility knife. It was one that I'd been wanting for some time and finally had a chance to order it. I guess that the package had been thrown around quite a bit in shipping because when it arrived, there was a quarter inch scrape (wider than a scratch) right at the snap. There is some play and I imagine that the knife slide slightly in and out of the case during shipping. It wasn't too bad and a little toothpaste on a rag took care of it, but I expect I'll see some wear there if I use that sheath.

Would there be any problems using a velco thumb break for retaining straps instead of a snap. IMHO, that would be a more natural action for release. It would also protect handles or hardware from getting scratched.

I hate snapes and if at all possible refuse to use them, a pouch sheath is much better, but that is not always practical
or possible. Any sugestions Gib

I will not use snaps, period. Where knife design permits, I build a cam into the welt that locks the knife positively into the sheath. Where the knife design won't permit this, I use rare earth magnets to retain the blade. When I am using Talonite (non-magnetic), I have to get really creative. ;)

This was made out of need because I just could not make it with out.....It was a mindjob figuring it out and I had to give in and make it like this...I WONT use snaps on leatehr...I just canīt stand them...this is called a gunscrew in danish...donīt know the right word in english.

I use straps, snaps the lot when I make carrysystems in kydex and cordura..but that is a better medium for those things.

Whenever I use a snap, I glue a piece of suede over the metal part.Dave

The only thing I use snaps on is large camp and bowie knives, and since I use 13-14 oz leather on thease, I counter sink the leather for the end of the snap slightly, then glue a piece of 2oz. leather over the snap. The leather spacer extends to the edge and is sewn together with the welt, and front and back faceing.
