Don't know if you all know this, but Master Leathersmith Sandy Morrissey is trying to get interest up for some tutorials on sheathmaking on the other guys forums with limited success.I think we could persuade him to come over here with them if asked.I think all of us would benefit. If you think this is a good idea, please chime in.Thanks,Dave

I'm surprised that he didn't come here first. CKD is noted for it's tutorials. This place is a tutorial heaven for for both readers and writers.

I saw where he mentioned doing tutorials on another forum and wasn't getting many nibbles. I couldn't respond though. When I moved my site and got a new email address, I changed my info over there and never got my verification and password. I emailed the administrator, who was going to get right on it, and I still haven't heard from him. I'm in read-only mode now. :)

Heck, tell him to come on over and join the family. We want people who want to help.

Absitively !! Great Idea -- a personal rant of mine, seeing so many great pieces of steel housed in lousy leather after-thoughts. Not as prevalent in the custom community, but the stuff that's passed off for sheaths on some really good (and not cheap) production blades is "evil". I love the tips that I see here, but I'd love to see a "project, start to finish" tutorial.
I know that space at some the shows limits what makers can display, but I also think a lot of makers just don't put out the sheaths because they're not up to the knife's standard. Really a shame -- I enjoy seeing the whole package.
Thanks for the idea and the nudging--
MtMike

One I'd love to see is one that explains how to carve 2 slabs of wood (or do you only carve one of them?) to make a nice, tight fitting wood scabbard...

Thanks,

JD

I'll also vote for a piece on wooden sheaths. Mineral Mountain (Senor Garcia?) ran one on his wakazashi sheath a while ago, and it was very interesting. (not sure which forum)

Dave, Don, and Mike and all that voiced confidence in my abilities to instruct in the making of knife sheaths--Thanks! Now where and how do I start this ball rolling? I do not have a computer but do have Webtv Plus with a e-scanner and a printer. I would like to illustrate, either with photos or drawings, points of interest in sheath construction. As it has been said, a picture is worth a thousand words. I would prefer to start at the beginner`s level on the tutorials such as basic tools, materials and supplies, approximate expenditure, availability of same and some of preferred suppliers. As we progress we could establish a question and answer program for resolving problems. This would be basically for sheaths made of leather, of course! I think that it would be most important to have photos of sheaths that ANYONE has made, beginner, or expert, and also a picture of the knife that goes with it. This would allow the sheath to be critiqued in an unbiased manner by other makers. This is a most valuable learning, and sometimes humbling, experience. I`ve been there, and after making at least 15/20 thousand sheaths, I still learn from those I teach! Sandy Morrissey (old geezer)

It's specific to katana scabbard, but it might be interesting to some people here...

Standing by, ready to soak it up. And speaking of soaking it up, how about some words on basic preparation of the leather -- deglazing, dyeing tips, etc. I've done so many different things so many ways, and some work some times but not others. Is there a good test I should be using on each side/piece of leather before starting a project? I usually get good results, butI'm looking for more consistent results.
Thanks, and my welcome also !
Mike

Just my two cents. I for one would love to see a tutitorial on metal sheaths for those of you that have the skill, knowledge, time and capabilities of doing so!!!!!!!!

Ladybug, you've already joined this forum; you're just not registered yet. ;)

You can fix that by editing your profile and logging in. I wish we had some place to point to that would walk you through it. This comes up often enough to merit the creation of some sort of "how to join" tutorial.

Point is, we know you're here and welcome you aboard. Joint the party!

*S* Hi again

Was just wondering if the sheath making tutorials have been posted someplace. If so, how do i find them? If not how will you notify people? Will they be on this page? Sorry for all the questions, but i've never visited a forum before... don't know anything about them. Thanks for your patients..

Ladybug, normally notification is not sent out. It is a checkin once and awhile kind of a deal. If you go to the top of this web page, you will see a link to tutorials. Go there and scroll down to a pouch sheath by Bruce Evans link. Some good info and pictures there on a nice knife sheath. And ask questions here, there is a ton of knowledge hanging around.
