View Full Version : New ideas for the next KITH?

The kitchen KITH is winding down over the next thirty days or so and I REALLY need some motivation to get back on the horse.

(my quick sob story)
I do the 40 hr gig at the hospital strapping down the overdosers and otherwise hazardous patients and I work 4 nights a week in my studio doing tattoos as well as 12-15 hours on Saturdays. I work only by appointment, and I'm booked until the second week of September as of today. Time to make knives or hit the weight machine has been lacking for all of 07 so far.

So..., I lean on you, my creative and eager KITH-loving friends, to give me a reason to live (i.e., make a knife).

I'm into a wedding set right now that has to be done about the same time the Kitchen KITH is due, and I need to do a sgian dubh for my trip to Ireland this summer, but I was thinking that it's about time to organize another KITH.

A volunteer to sponser the this one would be welcome. Make the rules, get a consenses, etc.

Just to toss out my idea... I was thinking a professional knife fighter's rig. I've got a bad-ass new design I want to try out, complete with... well..., I won't reveal too much at this point. Just tell me what you think of the timing and throw out some ideas of your own.

Andy,

In the poll you ran a few months back sgigh dubh's were the top choice for a KITH.

So, why not kill 2 birds with one stone? Make 2 dubhs, one for your trip, one for the KITH?

I was just rereading the article in Blade september 2005 on axes so I'm in for that, having said that I just profiled and beveled 3 sgian dubhs yesterday and I'll be heat treating them tonight. So, no worries on that front either.

How about a "high quality version of the knife that Andy is most likely to have pulled on him at work by a junkie" KITH? LOL.:)

the kith's im most interested in are the ones that arent too specific. like the first newbie kith was no restrictions, and the christmas kith just had a size guideline. I think the more liberla the guidelines the easier it is for people to get in to but on the other hand it can make it a bit more boring.

One of the magazines did an article recently about the blades of history, myth, and legend. The blades mentioned ranged from quasi-historical knives such as Jim Bowie's primary knife (I say quasi-historical because nobody is really sure whether there was just one and what form it took) to purely legendary stuff like the swords from Lord of the Rings, Exacalibur, Durandel, the Sword of Mohammed, etc. How about a "legendary blades" KITH? I wouldn't have to be something truly historic. Just your interpretion. Maybe a dirk or dagger like William Wallace would have carried, one of the Cinquedas used to assasinate Julius Caesar or a frontier knife that might have been carried by Daniel Boone crossing through Cumberland Gap for the first time. Or perhaps something from sci-fi or fantasy. Or even knives carrid by people who were not necessarily famous, but the knife style has become somewhat legendary......like a Michael Price knife, a Samuel Bell dirk, a traditional tanto or an Arab jambiya. We could make this a broad as possible, perhaps the only restricitions being that you should try to only use materiels that are appropriate for the knife and period. For example, Daniel Boone would not have carried a knife with a micarta handle...lol. A better example would be that if you made a dirk, you would try to use wood that would have been available to a Scottish smith in 1700. Any thoughts?

I like that idea also - it really opens the door to quite a few styles of knives including two of my favorites, the Nessmuk and Kurkri.

I like jdm's idea too! It really opens the door to creativity while giving us the opportunity to give the blade some back story--which we had so much fun with in the 'armegedon KITH'.

Julie, You are of course welcome and encouraged to participate in any and all of the crazy little things we do over here in this forum. Glad to have ya!

Now... who's gonna skipper this shindig? ...volunteers...

Delbert,
That is a sweet sgian dubh!

I find this particular style to be the greatest design challenge I've encountered to date. They have a particular look to them that must be honored, but I want to be original as well-it's tough!

Your's has a great shape!

Andy, what kind of time frame are you thinking of to run the KITH?

I'm trying to build a homemade belt grinder, so depending on how that goes, I may be in, I may not. . .

Andy,
Thanks,
I didn't know how well-recieved a full-tang sgian dubh would be, but I made this one and another very similar and they sold to the first 2 people that saw them. I've got 3 more that I was working on today. 2 in stabilized wood and one in elk stag.
Thanks,
Del

Thanks Andy- I'm geeked and really looking forward to applying what I had tried to learn at Ed's over Spring Break.

I'd be happy to volunteer but it would probably be best for me to sit this one out or help in some way. Right now I'm just content being a happy lil Indian learning and doing what I can to assist, I don't have/want to be a Chief.

Andrew, what kind of time frame are we talking? You have piqued my interest bro! Sounds like you need a breather from the 9-5 and just need to hop on this one for fun sakes alone.

Chris,

It's not the 9-5 that's killing me. That job's easy--my 'it has a medical plan' job.

It's the other 8 hrs a day I spend drawing designing and tattooing. Ouch!

I digress...

As far as time frame, I don't know. More time, more players, is the typical recipe. Maybe make it due sometime in September? Whoever steps up to take the reins can nail all that down. I'm with Julie on this one--I'll help out, but someone else can drive the bus.

I know Jim is finishing up the Kitchen KITH and I've run a couple this past year. Maybe you could handle this one brother!

There's an international kith going on over at the SBC forum. They asked for participants a couple months ago so I volunteered. Today they have 40 signed up and I think I'm the only one from the states. They do speak spanish or portugese but some reply in english so we could get some translation. Can you imagine a kith with 60+ makers? And getting something from Brazil? Any thoughts about that?

OK, looks like I may take over this KITH idea and run with it. So who's in? :welcome: And what's everyone's thoughts on the historical theme versus the legendary one? Those are the two I'm leaning towards right now. After I get a little feedback, I'll start a new thread.

I'm good for both.

If it is the historical I'm going for a sax, Sgian Dubh or a dirk. If it is a legendary I'll try to come up with a romanticized version of what my great, great, great, great, great, great uncle, George Drouillard would have carried on the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

If I had a choice of which one I would want to do first I'm for the Historical first, followed by the Legendary this fall.

I'd like to see the Christmas KITH back again this winter; I had a blast last year with all the joking & double entendres.

I'm cool either way, but historical sounds real fun!

Since this is my first attempt to participate I'd cast a vote for historical as well. More wiggle room for a first timer.

probably wont be in on this one my self but i will have a look everynow and then. I think historical would be cool so long as everyone wasn't too pedantic about it.
jim, i was thinking the other day when i should bring up the idea of another christmas kith, looks like there are already 2 of us in and its months away till it starts.
