Has anyone tried using pure nickel for there fittings like ferrules and possiably full metal sheaths ?
I am curious as I have run up on a bunch and I was wondering how it would work instead of stainless or nickel silver?
Thanks

Bruce,
I've never used it for fittings, but it sounds interesting. I used some thin sheet pure nickel for spacers quite some time ago. Man, that's some tough stuff. I wonder what it would be like working guard sized chunks?

The stuff I have gotten is thin sheet stock.I was thinking of using it for the metal sheaths on my Little Gen Tac's and for the ferules and buttcaps.
I know it will silver braze and solder,And the stuff I have is soft enough to form.I guess I will just try it and see what it will do.

I have a 1/4 in thick sheet of nickel which I use once in awhile for bolsters on large knives. I want to get it rolled out so I can use it in my damascus.

It is pain to work with. It binds on the drill when drilling, even worse than copper. However, it does not soak up heat like copper and brass does, making it a pleasure to grind. Difficult to get a shine on it, and it goes dull after a month or two, very much like a coin does. Scratches easily, tape up when you are fitting your sheaths.

I haven't tried soldering it.

Hope this helps.

I have ried soldering and silver brazing it and it works fine for that.I didn't know about it getting dull though.
I might try it on one of the small knives and see what hapens with it.

Why don't you just forge the piece down thinner then put it in your Damascus...

Thanks,
Bruce

I tried a small piece of the nickel that I have to make a ferrule. It worked but was a little thick for a small ferrule. It formed and brazed great, then it polished up really well,In fact you really couldn't tell the difference between it and the nickel silver guard in front of it..
In thin sheats it will work great for full metal sheaths and fittings for the knives..
COOL,
Bruce
