We no longer carry natural shell Blanks.

The reason for this is because of the deadly effects of cutting shell blanks. In January of 2000 the EPA placed natural shell blanks on their Hazardous Materials list. Cutting natural shell blanks causes Siliconosis, a fatal lung disease. Breathing even small amounts of this dust will cause death. It's effects are similar to Asbestosis and can take 10 to 20 years to develop. If you have used natural Blanks in the past you should consul with your doctor about possible health problems that can develop.

This is alarmism. Yes, breathing the dust can cause silicosis (coal miner's disease), so don't breathe the dust. Wear a respirator. That's all you need to do.

I occasionally use mother of pearl. I have yet to see any dust!
Out of respect for my health, I work it wet. This way I wind up with a nice pearl slurry all over everything. As for my health I am far more concerned about the things I did 30 years ago when I thought I was fairly well bullet proof.

I don't known if any of the materials we use as knife makers can't pose some sort of health (mostly breathing) problem. Using protective measures can eliminate the risks involved to a very large degree, rather than the eliminating the use of some material. Take care Charlie Brown, But keep on grinding! Frank Niro.

I hate to be the one to tell you this friend but that is exactly what it is. Why dont you do a little research about silicosis and respiratory protection before posting some BS like this directed at Don. His response was right on the money. Instead of perpetuating the wives tale that Pearl Kills he stated the facts. I better quit now I would sure hate for you to put my name on your list.
Please dont file a complaint with the FCC against me.

Having been a member of this community for quite awile I take great offense to your comments sir!

Don Cowles is a top notch knifemaker and one of the most professional people in this business.
In his time as a moderator here ( since the start!) he has done nothing but help me and others by sharing any and ALL information about this craft.
The same can said for all moderators in this community.

There have been a few flare-ups on the CKD in the last 30 days. The unfortunate part is that "you" have been involved in all of them.

Your comments to Don's counterpoint are "totally abusive", "unnecessarily personalized" and ... "way out of line" on this forum. You can bank that ... the "bank" is talking to you now!

Don Cowles is a "Founding Member" of the CKD. Don has been a driving force behind this project since day one. I'm afraid your attack on Don and your blanket statement regarding our (my) other qualified moderators here is something that you're forcing me to take personally.

Here's something you need to get straight right away ...
I don't care a bit about your e-mail club that finds is necessary to whine about the CKD behind the scenes. You guys can run your mouths all you want. The CKD doesn't need an advocate. It also doesn't need you in here writing content that a child doesn't need to see or read, and I won't tolerate it any more.

If you want to waste your time writing the FCC, your e-mail friends, or whoever, do it and get it done! But, if you find it impossible to blend in here, get along with our members or to control your threats, then you need to go bye bye fast!... period ... end of story!

I don't appreciate this a bit.

In the strict sense a moderator is a person who sits back quietly and arbitrates or mediates a forum or debate. They're just supposed to be the peacekeepers.

But here at CKD the moderators are also active teachers. We answer questions on the forums, we answer questions in emails, we create tutorials complete with photos, and post them on the web for use in the CKD Tutorial section. When we don't know the answers, we'll hunt them down and post them for those in need.

We freely give away information that has taken us years and thousands of dollars to learn. We do all this on our own time for no pay.

I've been working my butt off for 12 - 16 hours a day, yet I still take the time to answer all the questions I get in emails each day, and come here to try to answer more questions for people in need. FOR FREE. To sit here dog tired and ready to collapse, and read that we bully, insult, offend, belittle, and harrass the members makes me want to puke.

I hope this is the last bad mouthing we hear from you. Don is an outstanding knifemaker, moderator and friend!.....Do not get on his back or any other members here at CKDF....This place is for civilized people and those who can not live up to this and behave please take it elsewhere. This is the best place on the net and people respect each other!

Sir you seem to have a lot of information and have a lot to teach, but you seem to wear your emotions on you sleeve. I personaly would like your input but not at the cost of slander to other members regardless of their status.

After lurking for some time I feel the need to chip in here.

First, I'd like to personally thank all the fine folks who take their valuable time to post in these forums. I came here to learn and you people have provided nothing but the finest information. Because of your selflessness I've pretty much decided that I'm going to try my hand at making a knife or two. Just as soon as things settle down at the new job I started this week. ;)

Secondly, this board has been (until recently) one of the best mannered places online I've been involved with. Certain people just don't seem to get the concept of what is going on here. It would seem to be their loss, rather than ours.

Thirdly, I would rather my first post here would have been for a better reason, but there ya are!

Again, thanks to those of you who go way beyond the norm to make this place what it is. Know that somebody does appreciate your efforts.

By the way, I looked at you personal website and your business website. Good work man. I noticed you'll be doing some PSP tutorials and I'll enjoy getting into that. I toy with PS, but my affection is still with PSP. A lot of us dabble with image editing and you will probably be quite a valuable asset in that respect.

EPA has nothing about such a warning on their web site. Not their area of interest.

NIOSH has a page on silicosis but a search turns up nothing on Mother of pearl ( www.cdc.gov/niosh/silicpag.html (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/silicpag.html) )

Probably one of those internet exaggerations.

I don't see anything wrong with Don's reply. His answer was just common sense. He has gone out of his way to answer questions and e-mails, as have the rest of the moderators. I noticed that your not a registered user. If your not happy here, why not use one of the other forums? There's no sense giving yourself an ulcer. I find Don's answers very informative. This isn't the time of the year to be feeling like this, especially with Christmas in a couple of days, it's supposed to be a time of peace. Think about it.

Hate to keep adding to an old topic, but I've never found anything this gentleman said to be true about the moderators or members here on CKD. I've made knives since I was thirteen in my basement, but I feel like I've learned more the last six months from CKD and the related sources I found than I had in the previous years. I'm always amazed at how quickly my questions are responded to by people I know are very busy - keep up the good work, guys!

A a moderator and as the father of probably the youngest (11yrs) member and knifemaker of this forum, I take great offense at your rude behavior here.

My son has begged me for months to get his own ID here so he could be a member of the CKD, I made him wait until he completed his first knife. That way he could sign up as a true knifemaker. I bragged about the quality of the people here and how they will help in any way they can. I also bragged about the respect shown to others here. I told him that he would have to be respectful to other members or he would not be welcome here and I would be the one to pull the plug on him.

Then what happens? He completes his knife, gets his ID, and I let him into the forums to read, UNSUPERVISED, because I know the type of people that come here. So, my son starts reading and one of the first things he asks me is why this guy is chewing out the other members. That guy is you, Lott. I asked my son what was said and he said that he was not allowed to say it. I immediately got on line to find out what was going on and what was said that my son could not repeat. Here you are calling a respected founding member of this community a smart ass. Well, I will give you the SMART part. Don is a smart guy, but when I met him at the Spirit of Steel show, he was about as far from being an ass as you can get.

You can get wrapped up in your own self fulfilling attitude all you want, but do the rest of us a favor, keep it off of these forums. You come here and expect everyone to take everything you say as gospel. Nobody else here does that, they state their position and you can agree or disagree, that is your right. However, you do not have the right to force your opinions on others. You have not even been here long enough to let people know if you really have any clue what you are talking about and you get mad when someone simply disagrees with you.

I am not sure why you come to this forum anyway, apparently you already know everything and your 85 e-mail friends probably know everything else.

I suggest that you take your 85 e-mail friends, go here www.ezboard.com/create.html (http://www.ezboard.com/create.html) and start your own "LOTTs of ASSets forum." You can run it and have 85 founding members. You can tell them anything you want and they can just reply how great you are.

Being totally new here on the forums, I can't comment on past rudeness, but, as a health physicist and getting a PhD in nuclear engineering/industrial hygiene I can certainly comment on silicosis and alarmism. I read Don's post and saw nothing wrong or rude about it. If that was rude, then I've certainly been a lot more rude to various lab groups I oversee! I didn't take it to mean you were a fool, but simply that the actions by the supplier were an example of alarmism. Working with radiation, I deal with alarmism in one form or another every day. In my opinion, the company can pull a product for whatever reason they want, but to issue a statement like that was most definitely alarmism. Anything we work with can cause problems in the lungs, but that doesn't mean everything should be yanked off the shelf and a broad statement as to the disease causing ability of the product to be given as the reason. They should have just attached a link to the NIOSH or OSHA sites concerning lung disease, recommended the use of a respirator and allowed people to make their own decision...but that's just my opinion. I would hope that common sense would guide a person to protect their lungs at least as well as their eyes. If you are truly concerned with silicosis, or any other industrial disease, feel free to email me and I can provide you with an endless list of information.

Point 1 - Your original post. Most people post the actual source of a quote or info they are passing on. Maybe if you had done that (at least post the name of this "supplier") others could have contacted them directly to see why they chose that position. Why haven't you done so to substantiate your point instead of taking offense where none was intended.

Point 2 - David Winston stated he doesn't see any dust. And then stated why. Seems he was offering another option like Don's suggestion of a respirator.

He didn't say you were false in your statement. He offered another option (opinion). Something everyone is entitled to post.

Point 3 - There was no Tim who responded to you. Who were you responding to so that person may respond if they chose. Or do you like to argue so much you don't take the time to read everything before you respond? Were you perhaps responding to Tom Militano?

You show as an unregistered user because you don't log in.
It isn't really a problem that you don't log in. Many of our registered members (moderators included) forget or chose not to log in once in a while. No big deal we allow Unregistered Users to post.

A couple of simple steps would allow you to post as a registered user. If you really want to (consistently) that is.

First chose ONE account to try to log on with. And stick with that one. Write it down somewhere. You currently have 7 Local Accounts and 1 Global (Which BTW you have only had since December 8, 2001.) I would be more than happy to eliminate all of the local ones you don't want to keep.

Your response indicated unhappiness to everyone who read it. When people complain (and feel the need to use CAPS LOCK) it usually means they aren't happy. Paying for something doesn't give you the right to be rude. Nor does being a paid member give you the right to dictate what goes on here.

Don, another RadCop. Cool! I'm just getting back in the game after a 2+ year mental health break. Supervising RCTs at the Spent Nuclear Fuels project at Hanford here in Washington State. Actually start work on Monday after that recert cycle (yeech!).

I keep wanting to end up out at WSU tri-city campus eventually. I jsut have to convince Uncle Sam to fund the research! Looks like a nice place. 0.5 mR/Hr !? They'd really be upset if they walked into a room with twenty cats, each reading 12 mR/Hr off the thyroid...or the spent fuel area in R/Hr fields!
I've had to confiscate chairs and shoes...but no clothes yet. There's a lot of cowboys/girls out here at the vet center and they always act so surprised to find out the "HP Nerd" builds knives! Kinda fun sometimes to pull out a 10" bladed 8th century seax replica to let them cut some 2" rope with! I've got quite a few inquiries into custom jobs as a result.

Yeah, College Station and Richland are almost the same. Only difference is, y'all can drive a few hours in any direction and be in a new terrain. Give or take a tree or two, nothing changes much around here for several hours! It's a bit colder and more windy up there too I hear. Right now it's kinda looking like a post-doc fellowship over in Pittsburgh...but only having seen snow about three times, I don't know how well I'd do over there! It's nice to be able to stand out at the forge in the back yard and 70 degrees in the middle of January!
