I did a full double [flat] grind on a knife this weekend. The grinds look good but I can't get the sharp edge down the center straight.
Suggestions, please?
Thanks,
Dave

View Full Version : First full double grind... how to keep centerline even? WinDancer 01-28-2002, 09:46 PM I did a full double [flat] grind on a knife this weekend. Thanks, Dave Terry Hearn 01-30-2002, 09:06 AM Dave wished I could help you but I don't know a sure fire way to keep the center line straight. I scribe center lines around the edges and just start grinding a little on one side then the other until the center lines meet. I guess you could just say I eyeball it to make sure its even on both sides. I think most makers will agree its something that just comes with practice, maybe someone else has some ideas, :) Knifemaker01 01-31-2002, 05:20 PM The way that works for me is to just get it close, then use abrasive paper over the end of a small machinist rule to true things up. Surely there's an easier way, because this is considerable handwork. Steve m l williams 02-01-2002, 09:51 AM The way that works best for me is to finish the flats by draw filing with a fine cut file then going over them with edm stones. Will give you a flat bevel with a crisp centerline. I give mine a 10 second etch every so often, leaves the blade grey and makes it easy to see the highs and lows. No easy way. The better you grind, the less you finish. If the flats are flat then wiggles in the center equal wiggles in the edge. A good grinding jig helps a lot on double grinds, it's smooth and straight and easy once you have practiced a little. The video shows you how, Tool Time has the pics and drawings to make your own. Check it out and hollar at me if you need help, OK? Straight grind lines made easy! | |
