Here's an idea:

You tool guys will LOVE this!

We have a contest. Participants build a serious and inovative custom 1" x 30" grinder with all the bells and whistles we expect on premium grinders (which just don't come in that size).

We appoint a panel of willing expert judges (names like Bob Warner, Matt Walker and Rob Frink come to mind to list a only a few), and the winner gets accolades and prestige to 'wow' there collegues with! ...and maybe a "My grinder can beat up your grinder" T-shirt or something.

Thoughts?

Does it have to be limited to 1x30's? I am almost finished with my 8-inch reversible disk grinder (hey--this is my way of stepping up from a 10 inch bastard file!!!). My last touch will be to install foward deflectors. . . Scotty!!! I need more power!!!!

I love the idea, though!

I'm not sure If I could build one, but I would love to see a 1x30 with a plateen like a KMG.

Sounds like a blast , I dont know what I would use a 1 X 30 for , but what the hell. Its gona be a bit pricey to do it right , I wonder how many people would join.
I'll keep watchin this post.

Oh, it's just an idea right now. ...just thinkin' out loud, ya' know?

If such a project were to gain traction, it would be expensive to participate to be sure! Part of the charm would be finding legitimate and complete knifemaking application for the often useless 1 x 30. Let's call it an act of 'ludicrousness' (I'll bet I murdered that spelling).

To do something just to do it, and create an object which may just be useful... I can imagine a folder maker or a guy who does smaller blades finding incredible utility in a premium 1 x 30. Guys with exceptionaly limited space may find it useful too! A scaled down version of the Bader, Coote or KMG would be a great place to start!

After all, we have mini-lathes, right?

Let's just kick it around for a while and see what happens.

Depending on when this happens, I may be able to swing some time to participate. What about 1x42 though? I can get more useful belts in 1x42 and have been thinking about making/buying one anyways.

After a review of my supply catalogs, I concur. A 1 x 42 would be an option as well.

For the record, I've already drawn plans for a 1 x 30. Now I'll modify them to accomodate a 1 x 42 as well. I see myself making one one these regardless of whether or not this project becomes a reality.

Cool, thanks for the update :)

I'll start brainstorming some plans in my "free time" heh...

I think the 1x42 would be a better belt choice for the grinder. It seems more popular in the tool catalogs.

Anyone ever do anything with this, just checked back for the first time in a while. Love to see some pics if anyone put one of these small beauties together.

Andrew... Just a thought. Maybe for the winner you could auction it off for a charitable cause or raffle it off with a minimum amount sold? I think some of us newbies would be interested in that.

Has anyone done anything toward this yet. If so love to see some of the designs.

This old thread keeps getting a bump now and then. It may be about time to design and build one of these things.

With the current popularity of the very cost effective Sunray wheels, it should be cheap to have a few 1" wheels made.

So Why don't I just bump it again??
I have a 1X42 With 8" disc with some mior problems and I have been kicking around a rebuild. Or scrapping it and using parts on a homebuild. Disc table never worked quite right and platen and rest are too light and flex.
I've never had a good belt on it, just the cheapies I got from Sears, so am not sure I ever gave it a chance.
Since I found a nice assortment of belts at Tru-Grit, I think I'll place an order.
Advice on what to get would be apreciated?

as a 2 X 42 owner, the ceramic, Zirc & Gator belts make a big difference over what you can find in AO belts

Adding a glass plate to the platen helps your grinding as well.
