I am just now taking the plunge into making folders with machined intregal bolsters and would like everyone's ideas as to the possible stainless steels to use as far as machinability, strength and stain resistance. I have read that some use 416 stainless, which is very costly compared to many others and not sold locally. How would 304 work? It is relatively inexpensive and several of the local steel suppliers carry it. I believe that of the 300 series steels, 303 would probably machine easier than 304 but I haven't tried either and would appreciate any insight into them or other stainless steels that you might deem suitable.

I've seen 416 used mostly, but I truly like damascus on an integral.

Gary, buy the 416 by mail or over the internet, but avoid the 300 series. Difficult to machine, and impossible to engrave. The price of the 416 is a drop in the bucket compared to the price of the knife.

I appreciate the insight.
