View Full Version : Bader Grinder -vs- the rest of them Why? Arrowpack 04-09-2001, 05:13 AM After reading many of the post's made in reference to purchasing a grinder, I've found the most experienced folks keep on saying the same thing Don Cowles 04-09-2001, 05:27 AM I'm sure there was more to the original post, but it didn't make it to my screen. I suspect the question has to do with the best grinder. Bader III has scored quite high in the last few years, in part because it is a fine machine, and in part because some of their major competition bit the dust (Burr King no longer makes a specialized "knifemakers" grinders, because of a spate of liability lawsuits). There are others (Hard Core, John LeBlanc) that are excellent, too, but the B3 has a combination of desirable features and a competitive price, and it has found wide acceptance among knifemakers. There is a short list of things required on a world class grinder: 1) variable speed control 2) good tracking and smooth running 3) easy belt changes 4) good working clearance around the contact wheel The Bader has them all, and at a fair price. Hope this responds to the unpublished part of your post. Geno 04-09-2001, 07:22 AM I never used a Bador until I went to Bladesmithing school last year. I Still prefer my Burrking. The Bador(to me)seemed a little loose or wobbly. ( This play is in the motor mount area and can be braced.) My second favorite, like the burrking,is no longer manufactured, called Blademaster. It is like the burrking except it has step pulleys.See my surface grinder on my shop tour for example. The Wilton square wheel grinder is very popular, but new versions are reported to have tracking problems. The drive wheel needs more crown on it. Bader seems to have the market now. My opinion; They just don't make 'em like they used to. | |
