View Full Version : whats your day job?
Brett Holmes 10-17-2006, 02:40 AM hey guys, i was reading an interesting thread on the aussie knife forums about how many knife makers/colectors are white collar vs blue collar, it was interesting to see what everyone does for a 9 to 5.
im sure it has prob been asked before but im asking now.
What do you do when your not making knives, and in the case of full timers what did you do. also im taking a blue collar white collar poll, there are of course some jobs that dont fit neatly in to either but im sure you can figure it out. for example a rifleman wouldnt be either but i would say blue because its a physical job.
Also, do you carry a knife at work??
brett
Brett Holmes 10-17-2006, 02:44 AM I'll kick it off with one vote for white collar.
Im a small aircraft pilot, hopeing to make it large aircraft one day.
in the plane we carry 2 knives because we drop parachutes and may need a knife if someone gets tangled, also i sometimes carry a SAK in my pocket

Dwane Oliver 10-17-2006, 05:13 AM Blue collar here. Oilfield trash and dam proud of it. I'm a construction foreman in the patch. We install pipelines and facilities for natural gas processing. It has its benifits.
Robert Mayo 10-17-2006, 05:33 AM Blue collar as well full time carpenter part time hospital maint. And yes always cary a knife and use it daily.
Bob
SharpByCoop 10-17-2006, 06:16 AM I have always ALSO worked with my hands.
I spend my days fixing and maintaining boats and rowing shells for a rowing organization, and spend hours every day on the river coaching. Mostly high-school youth.
I'm lucky. :D
Coop
Technically I'm blue collar as I'm union for the phone company, but I spend my days working through a computer to test and trouble shoot corporate level phones and digital services.
Jim
rhrocker 10-17-2006, 08:05 AM I have always ALSO worked with my hands.

Wha...??!! I thought you were purely a photo-bug Coop, good for you! I often wondered if a full timer could make a good living taking pictures of knives. I investigated into it once, I believe it took a couple of hours, and I figured out I'd make more money being one of Dwayne's guys (and #### proud of it!).
I didn't realize you were into something else, pretty cool to!
I don't know if woodworking is blue or white, but I'll opt for blue, cause I sure come home all dusty every evening:p
TexasJack 10-17-2006, 09:43 AM I get to wear blue, but technically I guess I'm white collar as I'm salaried. I work at a rather infamous plastics plant on the Houston Ship Channel.
Ice Tigre 10-17-2006, 12:50 PM Well,
I don't have a day job so to speak... never have been formaly employed.... But I do odd jobs, mostly hands on work. I spent the summer doing construction, but I've put in a lot of desk time as a computer tech. So I'm about 60/40 (ugly striped shirt? :P )
My carreer of choice, I'm going to take training, and aply for in the next year, is law enforcement. I'm not sure where that falls in.....
I picked blue.....

shgeo 10-17-2006, 03:30 PM I guess I am in between. I am a geologist and have spent most of my life working outdoors. Some of it has been as a professional, but before that I was oilfield trash, working as a roughneck, driller, then as a mud engineer and finally as a geologist.
My job now is mostly office work, but I still try to keep doing manual things-like knife making-to keep my head together.
Edited to add:
I carry a small utility knife I made as EDC-modified Sharpfinger style in S30V with Desert Ironwood scales. I am too cheap to buy other people's customs. I only carry ones I have made.
I would be a solid white collar (although I try and not wear collars). I went to college for way to many years, and am now stuck in a cube small enough that it is considered in-humane if given to a prisoner.
Anyway, I design ASICs for a living. On my person now I have 4 knives, counting the leatherman (nothing over 4" in length by corporate rules).

waredbear 10-17-2006, 05:02 PM I voted blue because I'm not management. I'm a Quality Auditor/Inspector for a company that manufactures circuit boards for all kinds of applications. I inspect the parts coming in to insure they are correct, I audit the processes and systems to make sure everybody is doing their job, and I perform final audits on the parts before they go out the door. We also do some complete turnkey units for customers.
Knives...I usually have a Spyderco Salsa clipped to my pocket and a Spyderco Ladybug on my keyring. During the winter months I have another Ladybug sized knife attached to my Mini-mag flashlight in my jacket pocket.
In His Service,
Reid Allen
Clive's Knives 10-17-2006, 05:28 PM Unless I 'go out' my main shirt is a Tshirt now, being retired. But in the past mainly bushman, soldier, rigger, trucky so I put down Blue.
Cheers,Clive.
Messinger 10-17-2006, 05:49 PM I lead a double life. I go to work every day in silk ties and wool suits but if you look close you'll see calouses & I'm usually hiding some bandaged wounds. Once in a while I might walk with a slight limp for a few days, and there's usually something in my trunk I wouldn't want my coworkers to see. There've been times when people in the office keep asking "Do you smell something burning?" I just play dumb. :spy:
-Ben M.
Don Halter 10-17-2006, 06:29 PM White. I work as a consultant in radiation safety and litigation support for claims involving radiation. I'm hoping to get more into the radioactive waste brokering and plan management for customers. I'm hoping to eventually get back into radiobiology research...if the govt decides to actually start funding it again!
I don't typically carry a knife at work unless I'm in the field somewhere in BFE taking measurements.
P.S. I typically wear shorts, sneakers and a t-shirt to work, though.:101
Brett Holmes 10-17-2006, 06:41 PM im actually quite suprised so far we have more white than blue, i assumed it would go the other way. I guess we must all be a bit like Ben M hiding who we really are. I know a few months ago when i was still learning to fly tey made us wear the white shirts and ties and the whole nine yards and i think i was the only one to regularly turn up with cuts and scrapes on my hands, also my hands often had black stains from the steel and brown ones from the sheaths.
lucky for me the job im working now has a strict dress code similar to don halters, shorts t shirt and sneakers, and on a real hot day thongs.(flip flops)

SVanderkolff 10-17-2006, 06:55 PM Well
Pure white collar here. Been a bean counter for 25 years and do it now to pay for the priveledge of taking off skin with the 60 grit on the grinder.
More white collar doesn't surprise me. You blue collar types get to work with your hands while us white collars just get to sit behind a desk. The thrill of actually making something is unusual for us.
Steve
TexasJack 10-17-2006, 07:26 PM Left off the knife: Yes, I carry a Darrel Ralph designed Camillus Heat at work. Gotta be able to open a package of crackers at a moments notice!
SharpByCoop 10-17-2006, 08:35 PM I missed that, too.
Yes, even here in urban yuppie liberal blueneck Connecticut, I carry two knives everywhere. First is a small sheath knife. Generally it's a GL Drew 3" utility or my RW Clark version of the same. Sheeple tolerant. Then I also carry a Spyderco large Calypso with a fully serrated blade for those cardboard tasks.
My ninth graders look at me with BIG eyes and say "Is that a KNIFE you are carrying?" Then I educate them on the tool and non-weapon aspect.
Robert: He he he! I spend a LOT of time on my photo work, but I have been putting in 50+ hour weeks in my other job too, this Fall. No rest for the weary.....!
Coop
Mike Turner 10-17-2006, 09:46 PM Is there a black collar, I am a full time metal banger and horse hoof smoker. I generally shoe 4 or 5 horses a day, use to shoe 25 but the wife said if I did not cut back I would be looking for a different place to live so we cut down :yield: . I have read that some of you have calluses so lets see them. I will take a pic of my 36 grit hands tomorrow.:p
When I am working I usually have 4 knives on me :lie: OK 3 of them are hoof knives.
Well since I can't find the black collar button as my collars are usually black when I get home put me in for the blue. Blue collar  .
sleepy 10-17-2006, 11:49 PM Blue collar for me. I'm an electrical contractor and also do most all other types of construction during the course of stringin wire. I try to stay away from plumbing and concrete though 2 of my least favorite things.
I usually carry either ddr button lock kit knife or a reverse tanto recurve(1095) I made just for electrical work. I regularly abuse both in all the ways we frequently advise people not to:o :o but neither one has ever let me down.
Max
Bob Warner 10-18-2006, 10:04 AM I do neither. Not sure what color "Job Hunting" would be in so I did not vote.
I did White collar for 18 years in Telecommunications management, the rest of my life, before and after was blue collar. I did everything from mow lawns to manage 44 engineers (High paid babies).
Now, not worth squat to anyone apparently. Overqualified for blue collar and no degree for white collar (working up to high levels in white collar does not count).
Last job was Facilities Tech (Mall maintenance man basically) but lost that when a guy decided to run me down.
So I am preparing to live under a bridge at this time.
Sorry, no knife carrying.
beebee58 10-18-2006, 11:00 AM how about "Professional" :fencing:
I'm a full-time firefighter, been doing it for almost 22 years. But, then again I'm a "Fire Officer" so I most likely fall some where in between "Blue collar" and "White collar". As for my EDC I carry a Benchmade AFCK.
TxCop312 10-19-2006, 08:52 AM Blue uniform, so I guess I'll say blue.:D
Oh, yea. Several knives on me right now and one or two in my patrol bag.
BMiller 10-19-2006, 11:39 AM I guess if I had to pick I'd say blue. Most of my previous jobs have been technician type positions for high tech companies. But currently I work part time (in my opinion) with a merchant services company that provides credit card processing and all the related stuff with that. They have a pretty neat wireless terminal people use in trade shows that we as knifemakers could use. I also own an e-commerce business where we help people develop secondary income outside of their jobs. Got to have that freedom to do what we want to do. So maybe a little white as well huh.
I have carried a Pat Crawford Kasper for about 7 years now. Havent been able to make one better than his yet.
Bill
skipknives 11-02-2006, 09:29 PM I'm a blue,, Diesel mechanic, retired, and i don't carry a knife but i have a drawer full of em.. now I'm in my air conditioned shop ( Phoenix,Arizona) all day and loving life.
Jens Butler 11-03-2006, 11:08 AM Blue Collar Here, I sling old Dodge truck parts by day, out of an upscale specialized automotive resource recycling and reconditioning facility, ( Junk Yard ). I carry 2 knives at work one of those crappy folding knives with the changeable razor blade that I abuse the hell out of , cutting cardboard, scraping paint, rust & grease as well as cutting cosmoline packages, also used for cutting drywall, marking lumber, cutting insulation... in my ongoing (never ending) house renovation project ( the major drawback to marrying an Arichtect ) I also carry a Benchmade Osborne BM940S it was a gift from my best friend, This knife has been my daily companion for the last 4 years, unless I'm flying somewhere then it stays home , don't want one of those TSA baggage checkers "confiscating" my favorite knife :spy:

paul savage 11-15-2006, 11:12 AM Blue to the core. General Machinist With the moniker of "Project Manager " behind it, which only means I get the $%^$#%Y^% when the thing doesn't work.

Andrew Garrett 11-15-2006, 10:06 PM Three jobs: Hospital security officer (tan collar), Tattoo artist (black t-shirt), Substitute school teacher (that's white isn't it?) I'll refrain from voting since I'm not easily cubby-holed.
I'm very interested in Don Halter's job! My military training loosely fits that type of work. I'd like to hear more about it!
I carry my Yellow Bird EDC everywhere and my New York Special (from Drac) when I'm out cruisin' on my bike on the weekends.
AcridSaint 11-16-2006, 07:15 AM White Collar here, I'm a system administrator. Computers is all I've done since I got out of the teenage odd-job market. I always carry a cheap pocket knife with me in case any of the servers get out of line... or if I run into one of those infamous "box" beasts and I need to even the score.
TikTock 11-16-2006, 08:53 AM White. I am a development project manager at a digital publishing aggregator. I supervise application development and requirements engineering for proprietary applications we use internally.
Pretty much the opposite of knifemaking.
tmickley 11-25-2006, 10:38 PM white but blue collar at heart i think. i am a district guy for a large retail outfit. just like Steve said, it's a privilege for us white collar guys to make something we can hold, touch and look at...
DC KNIVES 11-25-2006, 11:12 PM My day job is as a machinery builder.I do all the precision and electrical panel assembly. Also welding and machining. I carry a Leatherman and one of my utility knives and usually a small friction folder of mine.Dave:)
JediOkie 11-27-2006, 10:17 AM White collar here. Office/IT manager. I've switched back and forth in my career but mainly white collar. Since I got out of the Navy I've been mainly working with computers in almost every aspect except Data Bases which are for really crazy people like subriders in the Navy.
I do have to agree that one of the reasons I like knifemaking is that you have a finished product in front of you when you are done. You have actually made something.
Jayson,
What did you do in the Navy? I did 6 years has a pit snipe MM on the Detroit and took a 7 year break and now am an ET in the reserves.
Jim

I was a CTO for COMSECONDFLT. Not much at see time and no duties during GQ as we were mission critical and couln't leave our space. I did get to do the DC/Firefighting school in Norfolk which was a blast. Wish I would have stayed in now but at the time my ex-wife was making me choose the Navy or her. But all things being the same my life has turned out well and I wouldn't have met the greatest woman in the world.
J. Scott 12-08-2006, 11:54 AM I am now white collar. Started out in the foundry though. We bang hot metal but it really gets hot when you melt it!! Then went to engineering school and wound up in the construction industry. Too much pressure as a contractor so I scaled back and now am a salesman for a door and lock company. It is somewhat of a technical field as doors and locks have really gone high tech with electrinics. I carry a small Old Timer 3 blade.
ClintB 12-08-2006, 02:31 PM Blue here...........Telcom tech for a small local telphone co. My company is small enough that I get to do a wide variety of work, dirt work and pc programming all in the same day!
Right now I carry a Benchmade mini Griptillian.
James Puckett 01-05-2007, 09:12 AM Blue coller alll the way. One more in the list of oilfield trash. Im a company man.

o'malley 07-28-2007, 11:03 PM White collar - messaging (email) and database administrator for a Bank. Occassionally I feel a little guilty when the grime can't be shifted from my hands, but overall love the 'double-life' - IT by day; tools and makin' stuff by night.
I am getting my kids involved when the opportunity arises - doing basic carpentry and weapon making from old fence palings (you know, swords, spears, bow and arrow), plus helped my nine year old son make a knife from a file (I did most of finishing, but he did a chunk of the grinding and shaping up).
KiltLad 07-31-2007, 08:42 PM I'm a electrical contractor. Owner/Operator...so to speak. I've done a few other "Jobs" over the years but, retired to just the current one.
I've carried some type of pocket knife since I was 9 years old. My Dad had a old 2 blade case. The larger blade snaped, so he ground it down too a 2 small blades knife.
I carried that knife for a few years until I had enough money to buy a Boy Scout pocket/utility knife.
At work, I carry some kind of medium blade, assisted opening pocket/clip knife. Usually a Kershaw. I use my knife many times a day untill somone says..."Thats a great looking knife you have there. Then, I give it to them and get a new knife out of the truck. I enjoy passing the luv!!!
Cheersd...Kilt Lad

john smith 12-29-2007, 08:22 AM Blue collar for me. I'm one of these gov't workers everyone jokes about, three guys leaning on a shovel and one in the ditch! But I'm the one in the ditch. I will go with blue collar. I am a cable splicer/cable repairman for the local telephone company. I also am a journeyman electrician. So I have worked in construction and the out doors most all my life. I grew up on a farm and pretty much always carried a knife. Now I make them in my spare time. I just bought a new SOG kilowatt knife that I am quit pleased with. I have been switching back and forth between it and my puma damascus folder.
This is my first reply/post on this sight, Thanks Shane--S.P.A.Knives

jonwelder 10-18-2008, 10:14 PM Hey Guys, this is an interesting post! Well, my "day" job, I build custom trucks, the big ones! I cut trucks in half, and stretch them or shrink them down to make them into grain haulers for the farm economy. As an example, the longest truck I have cut down was 28'-6" from the back of the cab to the end of the frame! Yes, this was a straight truck! I'm standing between the front and the back of this truck I'm working on. A friend that I welded with 30 years ago asked me, "So what do you use to weld the trucks back together with? I told him, 7018 stick weld. He said, "We can put a man on the moon, but we still use 7018 stick welding!" How true!! --- Yes, I carry a "folder" daily. ---Jon

SIXFOOTER 10-19-2008, 04:48 PM Somma both for me. I am a professional project manager for telecomunications companies like ATT and MetroPCS. Currently at Metro managing a projecr swapping out the old equipment in the field on their sites for new ones. I spend a Lot of time on the computer and phone working out details and then a lot of time out on site making sure it gets done right and on time.
In the past I have been on both sides of the fence, hard hat and steel toes then other jobs suit and tie.
pipecrafter 10-19-2008, 05:54 PM White for me. I'm a UNIX/IT engineer, sometimes manage departments, sometimes being managed (though just barely :) ). Currently unemployed, so I guess I'm not wearing any collars at the moment. It does give me freedom to be a full time pipe maker and knife maker though.
Andrew Garrett 10-19-2008, 06:48 PM In the spirit of Halloween...
Here's a shot of me at work taken about 4 or 5 years ago. I guess I'm a tan collar.
I'm on the right.
The cat on the left is one of the maintenance guys at the hospital who dressed up as me for Halloween! The funny part is that he has really pale red hair--very Irish dude.
NO ONE recognized him!

When I get home I change into my blue collar and go out to feed the cows and do chores.
Most of my life was spent in blue collar jobs, mechanic, carpenter, heavy equipment operator and oiler.
I can’t hardly live without doing something with my hands besides punching computer keys!!
I carry a Ka-Bar folder that I’ve had for 10 years.
Joe
Owd Wullie 03-13-2009, 04:57 PM I suppose I'm a grey collar. I still have to get out and do grunt work every now and then.
Drove trucks and ran heavy equipment for 30 years. I guess they felt sorry for me where I work now and gave me a job where all I do now is ride around in a pick-up and keep an eye on contractor crews and make sure they're doing what they're supposed to be doing in the manner in which they agreed to do it.
Sounds simple. The easiest part has been gaining 50 lbs in the 5 years I've been bouncing around in my pee-cup truck.
I get along with most of 'em pretty good. Got 2 crews from south of the border that call me EENSPECTOR OJETE ( Inpsector A$$hole)because I make 'em tow the line. I speak the lingo too. THAT upsets 'em more than anything. ;)
I carry a very well worn old SWISSTOOL, and a big ol MOORE MAKER trapper made by Camillus on my belt. What I've got in my pocket varies from day to day. Here lately it's been a MOORE MAKER 3 spring whittler by Queen, that I traded for. I'm partial to I*XL and older Solingen pocket knives.

That's a noble calling...
Blue collar here, refrigeration mechanic by day, father/husband and struggling knife maker by night.
Other hobbies include dominoes, reloading ammunition, shooting, and IDPA competitions.
Dreams of being a private pilot and owning a small airplane. (And being able to play the harmonica!)

Camping57 04-27-2009, 04:09 PM White collar. I'm a fastener engineer. Yep; I get to invent better ways to screw (fastener eng. humor). I spend my days working on the global Torx standards and messing with aircraft bolts.
I always have my little Swiss army knife unless I'm flying (I've given TSA about 5 of them already when I forgot to leave it at home). Around the house I wear a Wave tool the Leatherman gave me after I did the pivot screws for that tool.
Arccher Moon 08-02-2009, 09:11 AM Very blue. I have been in the cabinet making business for about 15 years(all my life.) Got into my fathers shop right out of high school. I get upset at people with they call me a carpenter. I make chipboard boxes! The art work is what I like to do. Kinfes offer me a way to use the really good scraps of really cool wood I would just throw away. I also make small box for familly. Made my wifes greatgrandma a recipe box that she cryed over for an hour. That was the best! Love the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, and the like.
dkaschner 12-15-2009, 07:37 AM white collar. I am a senior programmer for Wells Fargo. Bladesmithing is my relaxation.
Ed Tipton 12-15-2009, 08:05 AM When I was still working, I was most definitely blue collar. I was drafted twice into management, but was returned to the "worker bee" status after they realized I was a poor fit. The other time, I quit before they had to fire me. Like an elevator in an outhouse...some things just aren't right!
Since retiring, most days fine me in my shop either trying to improve it or working on making knives. I read, study, watch DVD's, talk to everyone I can, and try to uphold the standards of the ABS, even though I'm only an aspiring maker. I hope to qualify for the JS, but I know I've still got a lot to learn. I do carry a pocket knife at all times, and it is my wish to make folders so that I can carry something I've made, although I'm firmly entrenched in the fixed blade category for now.
So far I've made about forty knives. The knives are getting better, I'm getting better, and the shop seems friendlier, but I've still got a long way to go. One thing I'm kinda proud of though...people are beginning to ask me "how to" questions, so there are some who think I've got answers.
The Tourist 02-27-2011, 07:59 AM My "adult job" was as a credit manager in the financial departments of distressed companies. My specialty was saving struggling corporations from bankruptcy or take-overs. It was problematic. I was good at it, but hated the stress and most of the people and their behavior.
I was still young when I told my wife I was "retiring." She jokingly remarked that I was 'semi-retired' because we still needed the money.
I am not a cutler or custom maker as many of you are, however, I sharpen locally with Japanese waterstones, and sell high-end kitchen knives. No one else offers a knife with a perfectly uniform mirror finished bevel, and it provides me an income with plenty of time to ride my Harleys.
Kayin 02-27-2011, 01:34 PM After leaving server building and PC repair, I'm more of a general artisan-I'll make anything I care to try (which means anything the better half will let me get away with) since I have nothing but time. Was disabled last year, and they tell me to sit still and be quiet but I can't stop making something. Hopefully I'll get good enough at this to make a bit of coin. Never ask for more than a bit, though. Too much money is too much hassle.
Besides, I have a brand new son that needs to learn about the woods and his heritage (I'm half Seminole, and proud of it) and you just have to have a knife out there. I EDC a Gerber multitool and have a decent collection of folders and swords, but no real fixed blade knives, so I ordered up some damascus and I'm gonna make myself a good patch/skinning knife. Food has to come from somewhere...
Dave Armour 04-21-2011, 08:03 AM Not sure what I am- I run a home daycare. Before that well over a decade as a teacher in daycare centers. Farm kid upbringing. Also done roofing, handyman work, and social service caseworker jobs, so I'm all over the map.
EDC is a Gerber a/o or an old benchmade I've had for years.
bob levine 04-24-2011, 07:11 PM Im a knifemaker , first, last and always
Tom Militano 04-28-2011, 01:05 PM I don't have a day job, I'm retired military, retired from the Dept. of Defense, and if I knew how much I would enjoy being retired I'd have retired right out of high school, like most of my brother in laws. I still set my alarm every night, and when it goes off I shut it off laugh and go back to sleep if I want. Then when I get up, polish off all the coffee in the pot I head to my shop and make knives. Life is good!!!
