Okay, I've got the motor, reversible/variable speed and am now in search of a proper 9" disc.
I've found one that puts a new slant on things so to speak, and need ya'll's opinion. It has a 3-5 degree face bevel. While I can see some grinding advantage to this, I wonder about the disadvantages.
Being conical wouldn't this present problems with things such as paper fitting, and getting a good flat grind?

Thanks.

Steve, the reason for the face bevel is so when cross the centerline you don't screw up your grind. The blade will be away from the wheel going the opposite direction. On a 9"disc you don't need it as long as you make knives under 4.5".I put my own bevel on mine.Hope this helps,Dave

STEVE, IT IE LIKE ANY NEW TOOL, YOU HAVE TO USE IT TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT. YOU WILL FIND THAT GRINDING ON A HORIZONTAL GRINDER, WITHA BEVEL, IS ONE OF THE BEST TOOLS IN YOUR SHOP. IT IS FAST AND IT KEEPS YOUR GRIND GOOD AND FLAT.

I can see where the bevel might help as far as not going all the way across the wheel, but still wonder about paper fitting flat, and the angle creating a slightly concace grind. Might make for an interesting hollow grind? Am I over analyzing, is my thinker broke, or might this be a real concern?

Steve,
The recess in the disc is for safety. The grind is still flat. You can convex grind but forget the hollow grind on that machine,OK?You will need a wheel for best results hollow grinding.
The paper will run true on the recessed disc.Don't worry.
This should be a little work horse for you when you finish it.Keep us posted,OK?

Once you heat that paper up it will lay flat all the way across. It will mold to the face.If in doubt pull the dics off a sander that just got through working steel and see how it will stretch to some degree.

Never thought about the paper conforming somewhat. Since the first round of discs I have coming are cloth backed, that much the better.
Thanks guys. All the pieces are on their way, and I anxiously await. I do believe this is one tool that will get quite the workout. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Thanks again.

I don't think it will ever replace the belt grinders , but they are very handy.Enjoy the grind.

Hey, Steve.
Just to save yourself some money, don't buy precut 9" disks. Buy regular sandpaper sheets and cut the circles out yourself. You can cut the excess into strips and use for hand sanding.

Here is my set up. I sure you've heard the saying, a clean desk (or shop) is a sign of
a sick mind. Well, you can see I have a very healthy mind. ;^)

The motor is 11/2 hp variable speed, and is reversible. I got the disk from R. W. (Ronny)
Wilson. The disk does have a 3 degree (or so) bevel. You don't need it (the bevel) for
folders, but when I make a large camp knife, it's a real help.
