hi guys,
is a tail lock made the same as a lock back accept for the tab at the back or is there something different about the mechanism.

If I'm thinking of the same type of knife, the taillock and lockback work the same way. The difference is that the lockbar on the taillock extends out the back of the knife and can be pushed down from the end rather than the knife having a cut out section on the top of the knife where the lockbar can be pushed down.

Take a look at a couple of the beautiful Ron Lake knives. This is the type of knife that I thought about when you mentioned a taillock:

thanks for that chris thats exactly what i was talking about, its interesting you use a lake foler as the demo. i have always seen these folders but not knows what the lock style was untill i read an old issue of blade where is said. ron lake received a patent for his tail lock or lever tab.

Ron LAKE has a section in the book How to make folding knives in which he goes through his construction of one of these knives from start to finish. Frank CENTOFANTE and Wayne CLAY are also in the book.
