Here's a new piece: it's 24" long, 4 bar interrupted twist & split spine in 15N20 & 1070 with an L6 edge. The spine is hollow ground and the edge is flat. It's going to get a bog oak handle & a leather covered wooden sheath with niello inlaid silver fittings. Enjoy! ;)

Nice!

Did the L6 have any issues wanting to weld? I have a large saw blade that was supposed to be L6. It gives me fits trying to weld it to anything. Seems like it needs an extra 300* and half-pound of flux!

Hey Don, no probs welding that l-6, although the other end of the bar had a problem with the overlapping weld at the mill that hot rolled it out and it would split down the middle every time I quenched a piece of it.

Here's a close-up:

Lovely work as ususal! Did you etch the whole thing then polish the edge back, or mask the edge then etch the back? It looks like a nice crisp transition, either way.

Blade 22" ; Handle 6"

The blade is an interrupted twist & split 4-core spine in 1070/15N20 with a laminated L6 edge. The spine is hollow ground. The handle is Blackwood and the fittings are all Sterling silver. The twisted wire wrap at the bolster area serves to stop the fingers and is found on many of the blades from this period. (It is my belief that the wrap served to hold the tang in by tension; this piece is pinned.) The pommel holds a ring in the shape of the Midgard Serpent, biting his own tail. The sheath is vegetable tanned leather over wood.

It is for sale through <a href="http://www.beautifulblades.com" target="_blank">Mastersmith's</a> in NYC.
