I've been trying to drill a hole in a stainless steal butter knife with a cobalt drill bit using cutting oil to no effect.

I'm confused...I thought cobalt bits were designed for drilling in stainless steal and other hard metals?

I assume I'm missing something...

I've use a carbide spade drill. That works for me.

Cobalt bits will last longer than plain tool steel, but neither one was designed to drill through hardened steel. A.T. is right- you need carbide for that job.

Either carbide drills, or spot anneal where you want the hole and drill it while it is red hot. The discoloration will buff off.
