View Full Version : question about surfaces on rolling mill rollers

The subject says almost all of it. I'm almost done with my rolling mill and wondered what those who had already built and used one recommend for the finish on the rollers. I imagine that too smooth wouldn't give enough grip, but too coarse and it affects the final surface finish of the steel.

Way back when I worked in a steel mill the rolls were as smooth as they could get them.

I would think the polished roll would produce the best results.
Alloy steel for high temp work,(probably chrome based) heat treated for wearability, and smooth finish for quality.

Mine are now over 2 years old and seen a lot of use. They are mild steel and started as smooth"off the lathe tool" but nt polished. They rust between each use and now have a fine pitted surface which works perfectly well as long as kept free of flux.
