This is going to be a christmas gift for a friend of mine, she does the catch/release fishing thing at some of the local areas.

Ed,
I like it, can you tell us what the damascus is?

yes,
It's called "Martini Damascus Steel Fillet Knife" 1095 and 15N20 (1075 with 2% nickel) ebay seller swordman39 (rubicon39@yahoo.com) There's been several posts on here about the seller, all good.
It is quite beautiful and now the biggest problem is what to put on it.

Well...ummm....Uhhhh...if she does the "Catch and release thing". She won't have much use for a fillet knife now will she?
:lol :yield: :D
Better just to send it to me. I cut em up and eat em.

ok looking for suggestions as to what to finish this with. Any ideas?

Get a nice set of mammoth bark.
Good set of mammoth tooth.
Good set of giraffe bone.
Good set of Ironwood burl.
Good set of blonde box elder burl.
Questions:
Do you want to go Dark or Light or Colored?
I think slightly darker would be nice, and I think I would try and find a good set of mammoth scales in blue or green.

also keep in mind this is going to a female, she prefers wood over the bone. Im not to sure about the mammoth thing as if it is used I would not want it to get damaged.
I went thru all my stash of various horn, bone, burl, curl, knots, exotics etc and seems that nothing matches with it.

I think I found something that will go with it but am going to also add something in the front like a bolster but thinking about using ebony instead of metal.
Here's what I have so far and please pardon the mess.

This is buckeye burl and alot of motion going on. It's somewhat 3d as you move the wood you can clearly see some depth to it. I added a black liner to make the darker areas pop out some more, the black edges you see is a sharpie where I blacked out the excess that will be trimed off (I cut over than file off)
This is the handles side by side, again still rough cut and no where near final.

definately so. That's one of the first things I checked and had it failed I would have been seriously disappointed.
