Hello,
My neighbor and my self are getting back into the fine art of making knifes. My neighbor and my self have been kicking around the idea of a clyindrical for about three and half years,Well we got off our duffs and built one protoe type, and after letting it dry for about two weeks, We fired it up yesterday.Over all it was a Great learning deal, the shell cracked about 3/4" wide, all the way down the middle, but still all in all it told us a lot. The shell had three different layers, and three different compounds.
It got so hot in side that we took a piece of bearing race that was welded to rebar and put it into the forge.(it was cold to the touch. it was 3/4" wide,1 1/2" tall, and 18" long. out of a 18 wheeler) From the time putting it in, to the 30 second mark, it was bright bright orange, going to white hot.
We have sence decited to skip protoe type #2, and go to pt #3 because of what we found out. We are trying to keep it as cheep as we can, that way any one can build it for little of nothing, right now we have about $65.00 into everthing, including the mantifold, regulator, hoses, and pipes. The shell is out stuff laying around that you can get for free, or about $5.00's. As soon as we get pt #3 fired, i will give ya'll a report.
Now that ya'll have a little inside to what is going on with my buddy and myself, here are a few questions that we have.
1) where can we get a color photo heat chart?
2) where can we get blueprint drawings for a treadle hammer (we are looking for a vertical slide verses a swing)
3)we both have anvil's(his 125#, mine 75#) we were thinking about building one. we were going to take a 2" thick X 8" X 16" piece of metal for the top, weld 1/2" plate (recessed about 1") to both the sides, curved back, square front. when finished looking from the bottom, it would look kinda like a retangle box. then weld a piece of the 2" (in a tryangle) to the front, then a piece of 1/2" plate to both sides recessed down about 1/2", then take a tourch and shape the horn. Finish it out with a grinder. flip it onto its top and weld a 1/2" plate to the bottom.(with a hole in it), and fill it with bolten lead." The question is will this work?
4) what is the best flux to use to make demaskious? and what substitute's willwork in a fix?
5) what is for quinching? ATF,Hydrolic oil, Lenseed oil, Veg. oil, Power steering fld.,Motor oil,Rearend oil?
6) what chains are the best for demaskious? we have timing chains out motors, bicle chains, motorcycle chains, 6' chain saw chains, and normal chain saw chains.
7) same for cables,we have everthing from 2" crane cable, down to 1/8"?
 is marble good for handles?

Well thats enough for now, i dont want to wear out my welcome . Thank you for any info. that you might give me, We are in south Mississippi, and are looking forward to getting back into it. Glen and Ray

P.S.
i heard that there is going to be a knife makers show in Jackson Mississippi soon, does anyone know anything?
Big Thanks again!!!!

#1. A color chart would not be accurite to use as a guide, as the colors fade with time, and every shop atmosphere is different.Forge orange, weld yellow, and pack at cherry as a general rule.Experience is the best teacher here.Take notes as you try stuff so you can remember it.
#2. Greg answered
#3.Anvils need to be SOLID! You can do the work, but it will wear you out quickly.
#4. 20 mule team Borax for forging, and anahydrous borax for damascus.(all moisture taken out of it)
#5. I use veggie oil for cable damascus, my back up is used tranny fluid.
#6. Harley chains work best(timing gear chain).
#7 Only steel cable with steel core.1080 or 1095 works best.
Before forging it, heat and quench it to make sure it gets hard.
#8 I would not recommend anything that shatters if dropped. You will need lapidary equipment to work the marble.

I hope others will add to this. Check out the old threads on these topics, there is a welth of info here.
