I recently received some literature on a 2x72 grinder made by Stan Parsons in Midland Michigan. Follow the links below for pictures and information.

Interesting design. Looks like it has phenolic wheels. Curious how they would hold up over time. Price is not too bad. Maybe I can get them to send me a grinder for evaluation?

Hey, that guy was selling those grindrs at this years SOFA Quadstate. From what I saw of them in use they are a really good grinder but I don't know mutch about grinders anyhow so who knows.

Surely I'm not the only one to be wanting an update from those that have this machine. It looks like the designer has spent some time. I also would like to know just what those idlers are made of.

Thanks.

I didn't ask Stan but I believe that they are nylon with bearings inserted into them.

I'll be posting pictures real soon, once I get the pics up, please ask specific questions and I'll take close ups, etc.

Here are my first pics of the Log Cabin Forge and Electric Belt Grinder.

I purchased it with a 1.25hp variable speed motor (went for adjustability over massive muscle), 8" contact wheel, platen and small wheel attachment(has .5, .75 & 1" wheels)

I bought one of those grinders form Stan about 5 years ago at the Quad State Roundup up in Troy, Ohio. It has been my workhorse since then. It's a great machine, well built, and easy to set up and change. So far all has held up well. I really like it--and it's the most reasonable alternative (price-wise) to a Bader or a Wilton. Glad to see he's still making them. Looks from the pictures that there's a few new attachments I'll have to check into.

Nice looking grinder. Does Log Cabin have a web site? If not a phone number? Many thanks, muddy

Just out of curiosity does anyone know how mutch he sells his small wheel set up for?

I believe the small wheel was either $125 or $150 (don't have the invoice here with me. Very easy to change the small wheel they just pop in and out over spring tensioned pins.

Please give Stan a call, he really is a great person and very easy to work with.

I found this one on a search of the topic. Now that everyone has had a chance to use theirs, what is the common consensus? Is this one that you would recommend? I'm a bit confused with what few photos I've seen of this machine. Is it just set up for flat grinding (using the platen) or is there a larger wheel? (much like the other mfgs using a 8

Guess I chopped myself off--in short does it have a large wheel or is it simply for flat grinding on the platen?--Dan

Dan,

It comes standard with a Platen, I think.

When I purchased mine, I got it with an 8" wheel, platen, and small wheel attachment (three size - 5/8 3/4 and 1", I think, I'm at work not in my shop) with a 1 1/4 hp variable speed motor. $1175 if I remember correctly.

I do sometimes wish that I had more hp, but at the time I bought it, that was all the money that I had available and it only bogs down when I really bear in to the belt profiling.

All in all a pretty good machine for the money

Well after doing considerable researching into whether I wanted to build a 2x72 or buy one (and then researching what was available in each of those categories), I found that the Log Cabin Forge Grinder would meet my needs. I called Stan Parsons and discussed his grinder (great guy to speak with) and then compared notes with Bob Sigmon (Siggi). I ordered out a variable speed model with the adjustable platen. I jumped up to the 10" wheel attachment and while I was there bought the small wheel attachment as well. (Stan gives you three different wheels in this attachment). Considering the cost of the VS model with all the attachments including shipping to the beautiful plains of Kansas, I purchased a full value 2x72 and saved some money to boot. Sometimes patience does pay off. I'm waiting for it now as it is in transit. Apparently Stan has been supplying the local steel fabrication shops with this grinder for the past 15 years. He advised the pheobolic wheels have held up very well and no problems reported. The 10" wheel runs out at 60-70 on the durometer. If anyone is looking for a 2x72 and has some patience this grinder from Log Cabin may be of interest to you as well. Stan told me that he has shipped as far west as Arizona. The freight charges are known up front as he ships via UPS. I liked that rather than by motor freight with FOB collect. Guess I'd better close this post while I wait for the big brown truck!--Dan (P.S. thanks Siggi for your help!)--

Dan,
I'm glad that this worked out for you. I'm gonna get a 10" wheel from Stan real soon!

Let us know what you think once you get it set up.
