I am very excited about a new steel, made in Sweden and which can be obtained from my old friend Wolf Borger, in Germany, at the following address:
www.wolf-borger-messer.de/index.htm (http://www.wolf-borger-messer.de/index.htm) (Look under "Metalle")
Wolf recommends that you email him personally so that he can, "advise.
"Wolf Borger <wolf.borger@t-online.de>
His site is in German with prices in DM, at present, but will soon be in English and French. (See below for current prices that he just sent me.)
Anyway, the steel is a powdered metallurgy version of ATS-34, named RWL-34, for obvious reasons. It grinds easily but is "somewhat" harder to polish than ATS-34, but the polish is fantastic. When finished there is absolutely no grain to the steel, it's just like you're looking into a blade that was made out of mercury! (But, of course, a bit less fluid than mercury!) I have made 2-3knives, one a full integral, and it is wonderful. It takes a very sharp edge and should hold up at least as good, if not better than, ATS-34. It's make up is as follows:
C...1 Mn....4 Cr...14 Mo...3.5 V... .4 Heat treat is the same as ATS-34.
Here is what Wolf has to say about this steel: "That steel is definitely a cut above ATS and below CPM and other very, very high alloy steels, of course. But like always you win some and youloose some - there is no compromise in technology or is there? RWL 34 playsout his trump for being powder metallurgy. No need to repeat Steve's comment but keep in mind that RWL 34 has Vanadium added and due to the fact that thecarbides are very small you actually get a tougher steel which means thecutting angle on the edge can be 2 to 4 degrees smaller and you can put in 2or 3 rockwells more which makes up for better edgeholding and a better cut.And still have the same stability as ATS. Enough said - find out yourself." Concerning sizes and price:
I have changed a lot of things and the entire catalog has been updated in the net sizes available now:
35x14 mm 1.4x.56" $ per inch 5.24
38x4 mm 1.5x.16" $ per inch 2.10
40x5 mm 1.6x.2" $ per inch 2.75
50x15 mm 2x.6" $ per inch 7.68
50x3 mm 2x.12" $ per inch 2.10
Due to exchangerate prices may vary but presently the rate is in favour of the US $ and that very much. That means buying in Europe is cheap now. Comments wellcome. "And don't be shy and bashfull, try your German on me." Wolf
You translate. But it's one great steel! You can see the full INTEGRAL on my site listed below.
