In cooperation with Carbide Processors, I have completed this Loveless-style Backpacker with T416 SS Long Guard and Stag handles made from Talonite.

Steve, I just accidently heat treated a Talonite knife with a group of ATS34 blades. Any idea if any harm might have been done?

I hate the thought of throwing away $100 worth of blade material (not to mention the labor), but it points up the need for me to keep better track of which materials are in the batch so this won't happen again.

Talonite says that it's annealing temperature is 2200-2300 F, and below is one description for heat treating ATS-34. It looks to me like you'd be OK, but give Talonite a call. They're great to help and would be better source than me for your answer. Wendy will get you to the right person for assistance: 800-346-8274 Let us know what you find out, OK?

ATS-34 Stainless -

Preheat thoroughly at 1400º/1500ºF and hold for 30 minutes.
Raise heat to 1950º/1975ºF and hold for one hour.
Air quench at room temperature._ Subzero freeze at 100º below 0.
Tempering:_ Temper at 950ºF for one hour, two times

Just for your information, Wendy is no longer with them. Sorry to see that- she was very helpful, and I think (if I remember correctly) that it was even her son that Talonite was named for.

Alex was very touched by his, "win." He was very appreciateve and it's goo dtoknow it went to someone whom will take good care of it. That's a nice set of stag, in my opinion and the blade material seems to be great/fantastic.
