View Full Version : Loving leather..some of my first attempts
John T Wylie Jr 03-22-2006, 01:24 AM A newbie to working with leather , I decided a couple months ago to go with leather sheaths instead of Kydex so I started making a few simple sheaths , after my 3rd I realized how enjoyable it is. At the Vegas show I picked up the Chuck Burrows DVD from Chuck at Alpha Knife Supply  I think I have watched it 4 times and will go for the 5th tomorrow night.
I feel the video has dramatically improved my end results but you be the judge...
before :

after :
One sheath for a knife I had no way to carry ( and it was not going in Kydex no way ) Blackwood Henchman and one sheath for a small drop point S30V blade I finished..

Learned allot now that I know what to pay attention to and to SLOW down. I find the leather work as enjoyable as making the knife itself.
I finished this one up just the other night for a Rinaldi Matrix , I attempted to show the blade profile thru to the sheath. I am already working on version 2 of a sheath for this knife.

if someone told me I would enjoy sitting there with 2 needles and some leather I would have called them crazy , but it sure as heck is a true pleasure to see the end result.
Many thanks to both Chuck Burrows for putting out the DVD , and to Chuck Bybee for the hook up .
Ice Tigre 03-22-2006, 06:32 AM Whoa! definetely an improvement! I like that last one, you did convey the blade shape verry well!
I should realy get that DVD......

TexasJack 03-22-2006, 08:31 AM Vegas! And they say you can't teach and old dog!!
The sheaths look great!
I had to laugh at the number of times you've watched Chuck's video! It's the same for me. You can't watch it and not get better, and you can't just watch it once. I don't know why Chuck makes it enjoyable, but it truely happens that way!
Andrew Garrett 03-22-2006, 04:51 PM Ok, first, how do I get one of those videos? Second, What kind of handle material is on that wharncliff? I WANT SOME!
Great work!
TexasJack 03-22-2006, 05:28 PM http://www.knifenetwork.com/classifieds/index.php?ct=gen_bkvid&md=details&id=2200
OK, I think I'm with Andy here, I need to get this video.
Andy, I think CenterCross sells them http://ccinstructionalvideos.com/

Just ordered also.

John T Wylie Jr 03-22-2006, 07:12 PM Andrew , scale material is CF and Silver Twill G10. Silver twill works lik butta but priced like gold ;)
That knife is wa wicked lil cutter , S30V and sharp. It was a gift from Trace Rinaldi in Vegas this year.
When I asked Chuck Bybee about the DVD and if it was worth it , he said something to the effect of " I could have saved my self years of mistakes and learning if I had this back then ". Trust me , it is worth every penny of the price.
now where did I put that swivel knife........ :)
DC KNIVES 03-22-2006, 10:05 PM Great stuff JT, definate improvment. It's funny how just learning a few just a few of basics can help you grow leaps and bounds. Keep it up bro. Dave:)
TexasJack 03-23-2006, 08:20 AM Carl, you won't regret the purchase! It's one of the few training videos I've ever seen that wll improve what you do whether you've made sheaths for years or never tried before. Its funny because you'll try little things Chuck suggests and you'll look at how it turns out and say, "Wow, that really DID make a difference!"
There's no guarantee that you'll have as dramatic of an improvement as Henchman, but it's definately worth the price. My link, BTW, is the TKN ad that also takes you to CenterCross.
I have heard great things from this video. I have gotten information from the Masters on a lot of aspects of this hobby that make quantum leaps in my skills. From knives to photographry, so I look at this as getting a really cheap class from a master sheathmaker. I have gotten a lot of info here, and some really good hints after posting that one I destroyed, but the video will really help things along I think.

Chuck Burrows 03-23-2006, 11:26 AM I don't know why Chuck makes it enjoyable, but it truely happens that way!
It's because I'm wearing my red Willie rag (as in Willie Nelson ) and say things like booger it up! :D and as Jerry Jeff once sang I'm contrary to ordinary!
Anyway glad ya'll like thed DVD and even more that it's been helpful.
John - all I can say is that the skills are in YOU - the DVD can ONLY help bring that out the rest is up to you and you're doing GOOD! :101
BTW - you can also purchase the DVD direct from us at www.wrtcleather.com - hopefully our new on holsters will be out real soon! While not on sheaths and some what repetitive - it includes more in depth instructions on carving, dying/finishing, some on aging, and other general leather craft skills.........
Burchtree 03-23-2006, 11:55 AM Nice sheaths John -- that last one is the cat's meow. :D
I gotta get that DVD one of these days ---
Sandy Morrissey 03-23-2006, 01:24 PM Over the years (a great many) I have seen a lot of tutorials, watched many demos, and talked to a lot of people about making knife sheaths-----Not a one can hold a candle when it comes to Chuck's DVD or video. His manner of instruction holds your attention and makes you look forward to the next minute! I have been beating satan out of leather for over 60 years and I still am able to learn from Chuck and his wonderful Tutorial. You want to learn to make sheaths? Make Chuck your instructor! ---Sandy---
John T Wylie Jr 03-23-2006, 07:01 PM thanks for the comments on the sheaths. To have someone of Sandy's caliber endorse the DVD , you just know it is worth it. I am looking forward to the next DVD Chuck , this one I will NOT hesitate to buy.
I met a bunch of local leather holster makers at the Gun Show this past weekend , and plan on checking out something called the Leather Guild that meets once a month or so here.
It was a few years ago I got a couple sheaths from Gary Graley and I thought " Man if I could only make something this good " , I dunno if I am ever gonna be that good but I am sure gonna enjoy learning to make em the best I can.
John T Wylie Jr 06-04-2006, 12:39 AM had a few friends who have been keeping me busy with practice work :)
Not sure of the maker on this one , but my bud wanted a sheath for it.
http://members.cox.net/eki_karambit/leather/DSCF0921.JPG
at the same time he asked me to do a Leather sheath to replace the Kydex sheath for a knife he got from Ram ( Zero Knives ).
http://members.cox.net/eki_karambit/leather/DSCF0924.JPG
and also this cool lil damascus knife , this sheath was made to fit in a backpack.
lighting was terrible , sheath isnt as dark as it appears.
http://members.cox.net/eki_karambit/leather/DSCF0929.JPG
John T Wylie Jr 06-04-2006, 12:43 AM I made a lil sheath to carry this one in my pocket , Burke Prototype
http://members.cox.net/eki_karambit/leather/DSCF0903.JPG
a good friend scored this Neil Blackwood Grifter Proto in Vegas this year and he wanted to replace the Kydex .
http://members.cox.net/eki_karambit/leather/GrifterFed.jpg
and finally this knife I made for a friend last year , it had a Kydex sheath , but I offered to make him a leather sheath and he accepted.
http://members.cox.net/eki_karambit/leather/Grimmace%20leather.jpg
with the desert heat , I think I might do more leather work than grinding thru the hot summer months , it was 110 in the shop today. :flame:
John T Wylie Jr 06-04-2006, 12:46 AM I been wanting to make a leather sheath for this knife for awhile , which is really why I decided to try my hand at leather in the first place.
Mick Strider WP NM in Jim Ferguson Damascus.....

Hot&CoaledForge 06-11-2006, 12:51 PM As good as those look, I'm not sure you need any more practice. :D - Jim
John T Wylie Jr 06-11-2006, 03:17 PM I always need practice , but thanks for the kind words :)
DC KNIVES 06-11-2006, 03:42 PM They are coming along quite nicely John.Keep up the good work.Dave:)
Slo cat 06-11-2006, 04:19 PM I was lucky enough to receive a knife and sheath from Vegas Henchman in TKN Newbie KITH.
Coinsidently, I had just received the Chuck Burrows DVD the day before I received the knife. I watched the entire 3h 55m DVD that night. The next day when I opend the package with the KITH knife, the sheath just screemed "Chuck Burrows influenced".
Here is the KITH knife and sheath from Vegas Henchman:

Best Regards,

John T Wylie Jr 06-11-2006, 11:26 PM glad you like it bud , that was one I thought about keeping :)
Chuck Burrows 06-12-2006, 09:17 PM ...... that was one I thought about keeping :)
OHHH The pain! I know that feeling well - and it's even worse when you want the customer's knife just as much or more!
jimanddianaa 06-15-2006, 08:00 AM Old/new beginer here with 2 ?'s
Where can I get THE dvd and does anyone out there know what the problem is with ordering leather from Hermann Oak? I downloaded there spec guides O.K. but when I go to www.hermannoakleather.com/ it locks me up, all the other sites are fine.
Click on the link in Chuck's post above yours and order there. Right now, the holster video is on his front page.

jimanddianaa 06-16-2006, 03:54 AM I ordered the DVD today and with help from some friends. Well as my ARKIE friend would say "I'am a fix'n to make sheaths now".
TxCop312 06-16-2006, 09:53 PM I REALLY like that pocket sheath. Very cool for carry in a non permissive enviroment.
John T Wylie Jr 06-17-2006, 12:14 AM the pocket sheath is a design I saw Jim Burke use for a couple of his " Snitch" neck designs , asked him if I could use the design and he said sure. It's hand and carries well in a pair of dockers in the front pocket.
John T Wylie Jr 08-03-2006, 12:42 AM doing a little more sewing than grinding lately ( least until the temps in the shop drop below 115 or so :flame: ).
a combo pouch I made for myself... for Strdier PT and a Nuwaii 3 Watt light...
a mag pouch for a Colt Officers ACP mag
a couple Strider PT sheaths ( also did some AR and SnG sheaths as well ).
leather work is addicting :D
Sandy Morrissey 08-03-2006, 02:03 PM Nice work, Henchman. I believe that I would make the mag pouches a little deeper! And May I wish you a happy birthday on the upcoming 6th of August? Happy Jack Benny day---39 forever! ---Sandy---
John T Wylie Jr 08-03-2006, 02:16 PM Thanks Sandy !
I made these shorter for my personal use to hold my Officers ACP mags ( which are a bit shorter than reg length mags ) , I made some for a standard 1911 mag that cover quite a bit more of the mag.
Learning as I go and with helpful words from people such as yourself it is well appreciated.
sheathmaker 08-03-2006, 04:11 PM That is some very impressive work. I like all the phases of your work, but to me the finish work (edges, stitching etc.) is what is really setting you apart and above the average. A well finished product nearly always means that the same care and attention to detail was there throughout the project. My hat is off to you, my friend.
Paul
John T Wylie Jr 08-06-2006, 03:12 PM thanks Paul . I try to improve with each one that I make.
John T Wylie Jr 08-09-2006, 07:51 PM made these pouches a bit longer... and a few misc folder sheaths.
Sandy Morrissey 08-10-2006, 10:42 AM Well! All right!
Raymond Richard 08-10-2006, 12:11 PM Well! All right!
Well! Double all right!
Sandy, empty your inbox so I can send you a message. Did you get my package? Ray
John T Wylie Jr 09-05-2006, 10:22 PM a sheath I just finished up for a knife for a great friend...
http://members.cox.net/titaniumtoys45/finn/Finn2.jpg
I got the stamp slightly off , but he didnt complain :)
http://members.cox.net/titaniumtoys45/finn/Finn7.jpg
John T Wylie Jr 10-31-2006, 10:44 PM man it sure is nice to work with the 115 degree temps gone til next year....
just a few I finished over the last few months or so... trying to concentrate on keeping the stitching even and straight on both sides.....
the last one I posted in the gallery as well but thought I would a pict here for feedback from the leather guru's.
I used either Barbour's Linen 5 in Natural or 7 Cord in black sinew( just cause I got a killer deal on an unopened spool of 7 strand black that I couldn't pass up.. like $15 !! )... still going with the 2 needle saddle stitch.
Sandy Morrissey 11-01-2006, 10:24 PM Still lookimg GOOD-----ehhh, make that GREAT!!! ---Sandy---
SharpByCoop 11-02-2006, 06:47 AM Somehow I never peeked inside this thread until today. What a chance to see a LOT of new experience paying off. :101 Outstanding work! The master's have given you the praise that's legit.
Thanks.
