At the risk of being laughed at does anyone have a lead on where to get the book "How to Make Multi Blade Folding Knives" slightly (read alot) cheaper than the $300 I keep finding it available for? Any help would be appreciated. If this is in the wrong forum please move to appropriate spot. Ryan Minchew

No book, Ryan, but you can learn to make a slipjoint right here on the Knet School of Knifemaking.

The class will repeat soon.:D

Go for the class. Its cheaper and interactive.Plus multi-blade slipjoints are possibly the most difficult knives to make, so if it was me I would love to have the one-on-one help a class would offer.:mod:

Thanks for the help guys. I've actually made slip joints that worked. My first one was crude, but the next two had all the walk and talk I could ask for. I was asking about the book in hopes of picking up a trick or two in the peening of the pivot and attatching bolsters area. I've been using super glue because no matter what else I used to atatch metal bolsters to stainless or brass liners it fell off. I'll look into the class thanks.

p.s. how soon is soon?

Did you try high temp solder?

I haven't used solder for a couple of reasons. I don't have a torch of any kind and number two is no matter how many videos I watch I can't understand how I can make the bolster stay exactly where I want it. To me it seems the bolster can slip and slide any way it pleases and I don't know how to mark a line that won't be burnt off to see where I need the bolster. Hopefully that makes sense. Same also goes for handle material super glue is the only thing that I can find within my means to make the handle material stick.

This book is easy to find if your pockets overflow with cash. IF like me and you budget everything to the last nickel that makes it much more difficult to find.

Try the following links. My library grows by leaps and bounds by being persistant and patient. Sooner or later you will find a copy at a reasonable price. I found one about 6 weeks ago for $75.00. But when I called he had sold it just that morning. BUT I did buy another title from him. Patience!!

Search for the title and again for the authors. How things are worded make all the difference. For instance this book has a hyphen between the words Multi-blade. SOME sellers use it and some don't. That DOES make a difference in searches.

And don't forget the greatest marketplace ebay

Good luck, Tony

I hadn't thought about the hyphen thing. Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna give it a shot.

I have that book somewhere. I had no idea it cost so much to buy now. I think I got mine for under $20 at a gun/knife show several years ago.

I kept finding places claiming to sell the book for roughly 20 dollars it's just no one had updated their websites. I actually found some overseas selling for as much as 1300 US dollars. One guy I talked to said he couldn't give them away when he had them in stock and they were still in print, now he can't find em for under 200.

Funny thing, I have two of the books and now don't want to part with one at all thanks to the out of this world prices. I like the book but this on the stupid side I think...

I have to agree. For now this is just a part time thing for me it would be hard to shell out 1300 for a book.

P.S. If you do decide to sell one of the books for cheap lemme know cause I know a guy:)

Hey Guys

That one sold this morning for $100.00. Now that is a little more reasonable. I didn't buy it because I thought Ryan just might.

I have never seen a copy, nor do I make folders, but I don't consider $100.00 to be excessive for quality reference or instruction. Now $1,300 is truly insane unless Shadley and Davis are looking over each shoulder to guide you personally.

It is ALL about the HUNT.

I thought the 100 was reasonable, but I didn't bid on it. My wife has been teaching me how to do the ebay thing. I've never done it and I'm a little weary of stuff I've never tried. And by the way Tony is what the knifemaking thing is all about. He emailed me to let me know about this book, took his time and also sent me a private message. Tony hope you didn't think you were wasting ur time now the wife has me set straight I'm going to watch ebay more.

Hey Ryan

I don't feel like time spent with this brotherhood is EVER a waste of time. I certainly have gotten so much more here than I could ever repay. Just trying to do my share when I can.

On eBay you are fairly protected if you pay with a credit card thru paypal. IF problems arise chargeback is the last option. 99 percent of the sellers I have dealt with are honest and sincere.

But in several years I have learned to ask the seller many questions before the auction ends. If they do not answer, well they must not need my business.

ALSO inquire if they will pad the book well and ship it inside a box. This is my greatest problem on eBay. It seems as if some sellers don't seem to value their books as much as I do. Or are not knowledgeable about just how much damage the postal system can inflict. A book in excellent condition destroyed by damage due to insufficient packaging is a heartbreaker. The post office is NOT going to change, so you have to insure packing is bombproof.

We probably need a thread on eBay it self. As I already mentinioned to Ryan the search engines are fantastic, but they are very specific. If you know how to search you can still find treasures on eBay. You can save up to 100 favorite searches on your "My eBay page" and use them over and over. The key is knowledge, patience and persistance.

OK, this is getting rather long winded.

I am not sure of the price, but Shadley has his section of the book for sale as a shop manual. You can go to the Knifemaker's Guild website and get his email and contact him that way. That should be cheaper - not sure about Davis and his section.
