Hi Ed. I got the steel from Meier yesterday and have it rough cut out. The steel is a different color about 1/4" in on the edges; Meier said it contained mild steel during the welding process. Do I need to grind all of it off or jsut to where I can see the 3 layers?? Should I grind it off before or after ht?? I will prob be overnighting them to you on Tues, so hopefully you will have them weds. USPS is really slow...it took me a week to get the steel even thought it was shipped priority mail. Thanks!!

Hi Taz!
Grind the blades to a 120 grit finish, and to where the edges are approx. 3/32" thick. It will take me a total of 6 days to heat treat them. I'll send them back to you with edges of Rc 57-59 and spines of 38-40.
After you get them back, just be careful when finishing them out and all should be OK. Let me know when you send them.

Ed, do you need me to drill any holes in the handle to hand the knife? I know some makers want at least 1 3/16" or larger hole for hanging.

Taz,
No holes are necessary. Everything I'll be doing......I can grip the tang with a small pair of needle nosed vise grips. Since I'll only harden the edge, everything else should be plenty soft enough to drill. Let me know when you sent them my way, that way I'll keep my eyes peeled for their arrival.
