I have the opportunity to purchase a piece of equipment that may be
capable of being used in a similar manner to an air hammer. The thing
weighs a ton and stands about 6 feet high. The fly wheel on the side is about
30 inches across and 3 inches wide. There is an eccentric on the end of the
shaft which causes the up and down motion of the hammering shaft. It was used
apparently as a "punch" or "nibbler". I have no idea what of. There is no motor
but had an electric motor on it once upon a time. I can pick it up pretty cheap
but do not know whether or not it would be useful for 'smithing. Any thoughts or
suggestions?

Thanks

Sounds like you might have found an old punch press. Although I've not personally converted one to a hammer, I know of several smiths that have done so, and are pretty pleased with the results. The only complaint I've heard was about the motor. Once fella bought the machine, sight unseen, and it required a 10hp electric motor to run...........not sure what he ever did, but you might want to figure out the power requirements before you jump on it. Outside of that, it might be something pretty handy!

Thanks Ed,
pretty well what I thought but a bit unsure. The price is right but probably would not be able to do anything with it for several months but probably a good investment. Would have to hire a backhoe every time I moved it though<G>.
I have an 8 horse gas motor which I think would run it.
Take care
