I have had good results welding mild steel and L6, and good results with 1080 and L6. I have welded 1095 and Nickel sheet but wasn't satisfied at all with the hardening. It seems that when I add 1095 with L6 it is a bit more difficult to weld.

Is there enough difference it the .15% carbon content to affect the performance of the blade using 1095/L6 or 1080/L6 billets?

Would 1080/L6 steels be compatiable?

1080 and l6 makes a good mix. The l6 has good contrast with the 1080 and the steel makes a good cutting edge. The problem a lot of people have with 1095 is that the heat treat process is very percise (with or without nickel). When ready to quench, it has about 2 seconds to get in the oil where steels like 1080 have a longer envelope. Just remember to quench ASAP, FAST. 1095 makes a great cutting edge when heat treated correctly.
