View Full Version : How did the folders go over, Ed? dogman 04-23-2001, 12:33 PM Did you get a good response? Ed Caffrey 04-23-2001, 09:30 PM The one with with pearl got snapped up on Friday by a purveyor from Florida. And the wharncliff Tactical went the next day. I got to handle a BUNCH of folders from different makers, and learned a great deal. Some of the things that never occurred to me were..... burnishing pivots, polishing any and all contact points, and likely the most important for me........proper relief behind the lock bar/detent area! That last one should have been a no brainer, but it wasn't for me! I'll be putting the left over knives up on the site tomorrow, and we'll see what happens from there! Jason G Howell 04-24-2001, 07:48 AM I polish my pivot hole, but pretty much leave the pivots alone. I'd like to hear what you learned about burnishing the pivots? Ed Caffrey 04-26-2001, 11:16 PM Hi Jason, Well, since I'm new to the folder game, and didn't realize some of these things, it came as a revelation when we were discussing the "smoothing" of the actions. Of course masking the pivot area of folders with damascus blades was nothing new, but in addition I had never thought about taking the pivot area of the liners to an 8000 grit finish, nor had I thought about very lightly buffing the pivots (just enough to smooth the tiny pores over). The method I came up with to do this was with a razor edge buff, and place the pivot on a screw, with the head cut off, and place the other end into the chuck of my dewalt 12V drill. I tried it when I got home, and it works great! Just remember to buff LIGHTLY, the first one I tried got a couple of thousandths too small and had some slop. the second one I did just until the dull, mat was turned to a fine satin finish. That one was right on the money! I'm learning slowly but surely that the tiny details like that are what seperates the good folder maker from the great ones. | |
