I bought some .029 piano wire to make coil springs (just in case I need a spring for something). Can anyone tell me how to heat treat and temper them so they perform properly? The size was recommended by another maker but I did not think to ask the proper method to make the spring (not that I usually remember to ask all of the required questions at the time).

Any post, tutorial, class, or even make several hundered for me at your expense and ship them to me would be appreciated (OK, I went a little far on that one).

All you have to do with the wire is wrap it around something small enough for the spring you need.No heating at all.I have been using it for several years like that. Robert Washburn ABS Journeyman Smith.

Hello Bob,
I use a 1/4" round tube that has a saw cut in the end to wind on.Stick the wire in the slot and wind as needed.

I temper them at 365-375 for one hour.It stays springy longer without breaking.

Thanks guys.

Geno,
You just temper them to soften them up a little? No heating to critical temp or anything, just cook them for an hour after working them to final shape?
