Ed, I am taking your advice about building a forge. I plan on building it like Don Fogg's, single burner with air. My question is, is there somekind of orifice at the end of the burner, or just the open end of pipe. I understand his design, but I am kinda in the dark about the end of the burner.
Would you recomend another design or any improvements for this type forge. As always your help and advice is greatly appreciated.

I built one using Don's instructions - I had the same question. The burner is just the bell reducer - that simple. The forge works like a dream. I achieved welding heat in a two pound billet in under 5 minutes. I recomend this design to anyone who wants to get things hot in a hurry.

For a fan forced type forge, an orifice is not necessary, as long as you have a propane needle valve somewhere in the supply line. I have found that placement of the fuel input is more critical than anything. The first one of these forges I built had the propane coming in at a direct line with the burner and was touchy at best. On the second generation I placed the fuel input about 2" from the blower and have had wonderful success with it.
The propane needle valve will give you control very similar to what an orifice would. I'll get some pics up on the forge and explain how I set mine up.

There are several of us out here that your info will help us in our endeavors Ed. I have the shell all done out of 16" stainless, a 2 1/2" deep refractory bottom. The sides and top will have 3" of Kaowool coated with ITC 100. The top will sit down over the refrac base so it can be cleaned or replaced fairly easily. Just trying to make up my little mind about a burner mainly. This one is aimed at damascus of course and my big one will remain my primary forge for forge work.
