Hey Ed- (and anyone who might know :) )

I was offered an anvil yesterday and I took the guy up on it. I traded a knife for it, and I think it will work out as a decent trade.

Do you know if there are such anvils (Hercules)? And if so, if they're any good?

It's about 100-125 lb. I don't have an exact weight because it's illegible on the anvil itself, plus it's welded to a stand (a rim and part-axle of an OLD model A). So that adds a lot of extra weight.

I'm not sure if I'm going to leave it on that stand or put it on something else. Wayne Goddard swears by building a stand from plywood or 2X6's or such...

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick!
I have seen a very few of the Hercules anvils. I personally haven't used one, but by all reports I've heard they are a mid to lower grade anvil, and as long as you use caution when working on them (try not to smack the face with the hammer and such), it should be OK.
As far as the stand..............RIP THAT SUCKER OFF THERE!!
A metal stand dosen't absorb ANY shock, and it won't take long for you arm to feel like it's been run over by a truck.
My 300lb Trenton sits on a criss-cross platform of 6x8 timbers that is set into the ground about a foot. It makes it really nice to work on, and it doesn't have that ear splitting "Ting" every time you strike a workpiece. You'll still get that nice "ring", but it will be softer and more mellow. (if that matters) ;)
