Well I just found out a Hammer In is coming to town, which is outstanding news. I've never smacked a hot piece of steel in my life but I'm considering trying it there. There is a Hands on Bladesmithing section with Charles Smale. I would like to bring some steel with me to work, possibly 1084. Could anyone give me a hint on what size stock would be good to bring (maybe for a 4" drop point)? Or other steel and equipment?

This should be quite and experience if I can swing going.

If anyone is interested in more info, here's the ABS flier.... www.americanbladesmith.com/ScagelHMN.htm (http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ScagelHMN.htm)

Thanks,
Tom

1/4" X 1" would be a good place to start. I would recommend sticking with a simple steel like the 1084, or if you can, some 5160. I got the flyer a couple of days ago, and would love to be there, however, Uncle Sam says I need to be in Germany. Make sure you take good mental notes, and give us a report afterwards!

Tom, 1/4x1 to 1/4x11/2 will work fine. 5160 is good too. Have a bar long enough to work withuot tongs, say 3 feet or so. Sure makes it go faster, especially if their are several people waiting their turn. SAFTEY GLASSES, hammer and gloves. Lots to see and hear, take your camera. The information that is freely shared at these hammer-ins is enormous. It will be a blast. I don't miss the one at Old Washington. mw

Thanks for the replies guys! I'll start looking into getting some stock.

I tried searching for hammer info, but didn't come up with much. What style/type/weight would you recommend for a multi purpose beginner's hammer?

Thanks,
Tom

I was just invited today to this hammer-in by Sava Damlovac, and couldn't think about anything else since then!
This should be a lot of fun. I can't say if I am going or not right now but if you go I am sure you will have a lot of fun.

I think I'm going to go. It's less than an hour away for me! Only stock I have is 1/8" thick, which is probably too small to work with ona forge. I also have never slapped steel around like this, but I want to try! If anyone is going from around here, email me. I'm located in Holland. If you have a more appropriate piece of steel for me to use, too, we could trade. I have some nice handle materials I probably won't get a chance to use. Thanks!
