Bored and nothing to do, so I am looking at RMK on Ebay. I see someone has a 1970's RMK with a Johnson Black sheath. My memory has never been great, but I don't ever recall seeing a BLACK Johnson. But I am still young enough to learn!!!
It is item 6589899347.

Hi Rod!

This is a very good question.

I really don't know the answer, but I suspect that there were no black sheaths made by the Johnsons. This is probably an after market dye job.

I seem to recall that this was discussed a long time ago on another forum, in another life but I'm not sure. My memory is failing...

I think Greg Gutcher once said that his early Sullivan's black sheaths had the dye running all over the place until he changed his method.

I'm probably all wet here, but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will answer your query.

Cheers!

Moose,

You are correct in your statement regarding Johnson's inability to produce black sheaths worth a darn. Pete once told me that they were so terrible that they even asked Johnson not to offer any after-market sheaths that were black!

But, that being said: Johnson DID make black sheaths, just not very good!

Thank you for your input. It is hard for my old eyes to determine how good the sheath really is, by looking at the pics on the internet. NOT that I was going to buy the knife anyway. Just trying to learn.
