A friend of mine out west has made a unusual request as a belated Christmas present and I need some advice.

He has some obsidian knapped blades he'd like me to carve some antler handles for. The carvings not the problem but I've never seen a flint knife upclose so the inset for the blade is a mystery to me. Is there a general rule or where they custom fit to the individual blade. There are some guys on ebay who are selling similar handles but I cant tell if they are leaving that part to the knife maker or if there is a specialised measurement.

If there are any knapped knife makers out there feel free to email me privately kyferin@sbcglobal.net or it can be discussed here. Thank you in advance.

I have one that someone gave me and I'd guess that the rawhide wrapped around the bolster area hides a couple slots that allow the antler to bend just enough under the pressure of the rawhide as it dries... to clamp down on the obsidian blade. The obsidian blade's tang is a mystery! It sure cuts though.

Post your results! :)
