I know too many young adults that are completely pissing thier lives away and doing nothing but being a PITA to society in general. I can tell from your posted questions that you are ahead of your physical age in intelligence and most of all, drive to improve yourself. You are jumping into an amazing hobby that will always have cool things to learn and always challenge you, that builds character and self worth. With that nothing but good will come your way. OK, I am starting to sound like a dad now so I better quit.:lol I am just starting damascus myself so we will be learning alot, don't be afraid to ask questions. You will have less bad habbits as obstacles then people that are older then you. Keep up the good work! Your fabrication skills are way, way ahead of what mine were at your age. Rock on!!!! J. Asking questions is my specialty, so don't worry about that. I wouldn’t have achieved what I have so far if it wasn't for the good people on knife forums. I send much thanks your way. I have seen kids my age screw around, screw up, fail school, and do drugs and alcohol, but don't worry my taste have always differed from the normal teenager. I was one of the only ones in my grade school who lissioned to real music (chuck berry, Black Sabbath, Hyndrix, ext....). Its seems as though making something from nothing is a lost concept for the majority of the youth of this nation. Along with playing the fiddle, guitar, and sports knife making is now one of my most cherished hobbies. BTW, I got my forge insulation in today. Maybe I can get that thing lined. :) Thanks, cwp 12-08-2005, 02:29 PM Jimmy, Videos are great, but if you get a chance hit the hammer-ins. Ed just went over mosaic damascus at the Northwest Hammer-in @ Lyle's shop in Bothell, Washington. --Carl J. Keeton 12-08-2005, 06:54 PM He needes to do one in Louisiana!! :) Its not nearly as cold down here this time of year, and it could be a nice thing for the blacksmith katrina victums. :) Its a shame.... I never hear anything about a knife show in Louisiana. Do they even have them? All I see are these gun shows that sell the cheap 20$ katana sets, and stuff like that. Don't get me wrong the guns there are nice, but there are like no custom kife guys there.... cwp 12-08-2005, 09:56 PM Jimmy, I am in Idaho, with the same selection of shows you are talking about. I bet you could find a lot around Louisiana, there are a lot of Bladesmith's down south. The one I went to was an 8hr drive from here. Justified it by taking the week long class prior to the hammer-in. It was well worth the time and money though. I have also decided to go to the Reno Show this year, finally booked a flight because it would be a good 6-7hr drive to Reno from here. Anyway, if you can get into other shops and see how others do things it can be a huge benefit to you. --Carl Don Halter 12-09-2005, 08:31 AM The Spirit of Steel Show in Dallas has tutorials as well as actual demos. A bit of a drive for you, but worth it. Check out the listings in back of Blade magazine, I thought I saw a knife show listed for LA, but it may have been a gun show that just happened to have knives. I try and make it by Amatos Winery there once a year, I'll throw in the forge and anvil next time and stop by:lol . sjaqua 12-09-2005, 03:52 PM I just popped into the Damascus form because I was going to breath some new life into an old topic. I tried a simple mosaic Damascus this time last year. At that time it was not successful. I had welds fail when flattening out the accordion cut bar. So for the last year I went back and worked on my fit and finish for a while. Now that I have reached the next level in that, it’s back to pattern development again. Recently I did my first successful multi-core composite pattern. I refined my technique on welding the pattern bars to each other. So I figure it’s time try the simple mosaic pattern I came up with again. Now this won’t involve a press and powdered metal. It’s a something I can do with just my 3-pound hammer. But maybe it will provide some small inspiration to you. So to that end I’ll be reactivating an old thread, or starting a new one. I will try to do a series of step-by-step posts starting this weekend. | |
