View Full Version : Back thickness for a big bowie? JossDelage 04-25-2002, 12:25 PM What is the normal (+/-) thickness for a big bowie, measured at the ricasso? Thanks, JD foxcreek 04-25-2002, 02:20 PM I feel like this has a lot to do with length and width and over all purpose and style of blade. You may want to make a thick stumpy blade or a long light quick blade. generally though you will find a pleasing and functional proportion at about 3/16"-1/4" spine thickness for a "medium" long, "medium" wide" Bowie. You can start a little thicker at the ricasso and taper a little thinner towards the front, etc. A really BIG bowie that is going for the power chopper might go 3/8" but thats going a little overboard. Personlly I find 3/16 plenty even on long blades. foxcreek 04-25-2002, 02:22 PM OOPS duplicate post, clumsy me. JossDelage 04-25-2002, 02:58 PM Thanks, I'll aim for 3/16". JD Cactusforge 04-25-2002, 07:02 PM Joss, Most of my Bowies are forged from .262 thick meterial so finish size ie 3/16 to 1/4 very large ones are forged from .362 meterial so thay end up a little thicker.
