Just another work in progress photo of my latest fun project.

I am attempting to build a working copy of the Museum of London folding knife listed as item 309 in the book on knives from the museum.

Late 13th century
(SWA81 [2018] {414})
Blade, length 112mm, width 14mm, thickness 2mm,
iron thumb piece. Wooden handle (box), length
134mm, single piece of wood, iron pivot. Plate 00.

I did a three layer welded laminate. A high carbon steel core (1080) with antique wrought iron sides. The wrought iron side pieces will run right down to the edge bevel. This should make for a nice historic appearance and still allow for good edge performance. Next comes the fun part, making the handle and making it all work. This will be my first folding knife.

And here it is. It's a very simple folding knife. But still very interesting from a historic point of view.

The handle is english box wood as per the original. It fits in the hand very nicely.

Thats great, is the blade slot tapered as in the drawing?

No I wasn't able to tapper the slot. That may well be a option on future works. But as I said elsewhere, then next historic folder (Viking age) has pinned bone scales for sides. And after that I may work my way back to the Roman age with a cast bronze handle.
